Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University sophomore forward
Elliot Cutts (London, England) scored in the first minute of the second overtime Saturday afternoon, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 victory over 15th-ranked Lincoln Memorial University in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action. Wingate improves to 7-3 overall and 5-0 in the SAC, while LMU suffers its first loss of the year, falling to 5-1-2 overall and 1-1-2 in league play. The Bulldogs have now won 16 consecutive regular season SAC matches.
Wingate out-shot Lincoln Memorial 8-3, with a 3-0 advantage in shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes, but neither team could find the back of the net.
The second half saw very few chances for either side, with LMU holding a 5-3 edge in shots and 1-0 advantage in shots on goal. All-American
Jon Ander (Bilbao, Spain) nearly ended things in the 87th minute, but his shot from the left side of the box missed just wide of the right post.
Each team was able to register just one shot each in the first 10-minute overtime period, neither of which was on goal.
The Bulldogs wasted no time finishing things off in the second overtime. A long pass from midfield seconds after the kickoff was misplayed by the LMU defense and Cutts got the ball on the right side of the top of the box. He lined one into the opposite corner for his league-best eighth goal of the season to end it.
The Bulldogs out-shot the Railsplitters 13-9 on the afternoon, with a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper
Pablo Jara (Santiago, Chile) had one save to collect the shutout, while
Caleb Cothrin had three saves for Lincoln Memoria.
