Garrett Bridgewater (Cape Carteret, N.C.) scored the game's only goal Wednesday night, leading the Bulldogs to a 1-0 victory at Coker College in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action. Wingate wins its 17th consecutive regular season SAC match, improving to 8-3 overall and 6-0 in league play. Coker falls to 1-7 overall and 0-5 in the SAC.
Wingate dominated things in the first half, taking the game's only six shots, including three shots on goal. The Bulldogs earned a penalty kick midway through, but
Felipe Checco (Brotas, Brazil) was called off the penalty kick for stopping during his attempt. Junior
Nate Evans (Greenville, N.C.) nearly put the 'Dogs on the board in the 31st minute, but his shot hit the bottom of the crossbar.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the 67th minute. Bridgewater got some space on the left and fired one from 25 yards out, netting his first goal of the year to give Wingate the lead.
The Bulldogs finished the night with a 16-2 advantage in shots, including a 10-0 edge in shots on goal. Senior
Jon Ander (Bilbao, Spain) and sophomore
Elliot Cutts (London, England) each took four shots, with three shots on goal, while Evans also had four shots, with a shot on goal in addition to the shot off the crossbar. Junior
Pablo Jara (Santiago, Chile) collected the shutout for Wingate, while
Justin Walker had three saves for the Cobras.
Wingate is back in action Saturday, hosting Clayton State at 4 p.m.
