Hartsville, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs picked up their second road win in three days Monday night, shooting a season-high 60 percent from the field in a 90-77 victory at Coker College in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action. The 'Dogs knocked down nine-of-13 shots from three-point range while scoring a season-high 90 points, improving to 10-9 overall and 7-4 in the SAC. The Cobras fall to 8-10 overall and 5-5 in league play.
Junior guard
Marco Haskins (Fredericksburg, Va.) scored a career-high 25 points to lead the Wingate attack, going seven-for-10 from the field while hitting all four shots from beyond the arc, adding six rebounds and four assists. Senior guard
Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) had 20 points on seven-of-12 shooting, while graduate student
Kerigan Farley (Hickory, N.C.) contributed 13 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and four steals. Junior forward
Neico Robinson (Easley, S.C.) added 12 points and five boards, while senior forward
Devarious Christian (Charlotte, N.C.) was four-for-five from the field, compiling eight points and six rebounds.
Jake Barrett had 22 points to lead the Coker offense.
Khalil Halls added 19 points, while
Dante Samuels contributed 16 points for the Cobras.
Wingate used an early 17-0 run to take a 21-5 lead eight minutes into the opening half. A dunk and a jumper from Robinson started the spurt, while Haskins capped the flurry with a triple to put the 'Dogs on top by 16. Halls got the Cobras within 12 at the midway point of the half with a layup, but Lolar's three-point play pushed the advantage back to 15.
A Robinson dunk and Haskins three put Wingate on top 36-16 with six minutes left in the half. Coker scored the next 10 points, cutting the lead in half when Samuels knocked down a three at the 4:08 mark to make it 36-26. A Christian bucket and two free throws from
Chiamaka Browne (Syracuse, N.Y.) made it 44-29, while a triple from
Charlie Hovasse (Colorado Springs, Colo.) put the Bulldogs on top by 18 with a minute left. Barrett's three in the final minute trimmed the halftime lead to 15 at 47-32.
Nathan Lemke's layup four minutes into the second half got the Cobras within eight, but Lolar's three put Wingate's advantage back in double figures. A Samuels three-point play made it a five-point game with 13 minutes remaining, while A Halls three a minute later got the Cobras within four at 58-54. Haskins knocked down three free throws to stretch the lead to seven, but Barrett's bucket at the 10:31 mark made it a two-point game at 61-59.
Wingate scored the next six points, getting a dunk and two free throws from
Quantra Taylor (Indian Land, S.C.) to start the spurt, while another Taylor dunk capped it to make it 67-59. Halls made it a six-point game with a jumper at the 7:36 mark, but back-to-back Lolar buckets put the Bulldogs back on top by 10. Lolar's triple at the 5:25 mark made it 76-64, while free throws from Farley and Taylor put Wingate on top by 15 in the final 90 seconds.
The Bulldogs went 30-for-50 from the field to shoot their highest percentage from the field since February of 2013 while shooting 69.2 percent from beyond the arc. Coker shot 42 percent from the field, connecting on nine-of-32 shots from three-point range (28.1 percent). Wingate held a 39-24 rebounding advantage, with an 8-7 edge in second-chance points.
Wingate plays its third road game in five days Wednesday, traveling to Newberry for an 8 p.m. start.
