Marco Haskins recorded his second double-double of the season and sixth 20-point performance Wednesday evening, leading the Bulldogs to a 77-68 victory at Coker College in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action. The Bulldogs improve to 3-4 on the season and 1-0 in league play, while the Cobras fall to 1-4 overall, and start 0-1 in league play.
Wingate shot 43.5 percent from the field, holding Coker to 36.2 percent shooting on the night. The Bulldogs hit nine-of-23 shots from three-point range, while Coker hit eight-of-24 shots from beyond the arc. The 'Dogs had six blocks and five steals on the evening, forcing 19 turnovers while holding a 39-36 rebounding advantage.
Haskins had 25 points, 10 rebounds and two assists to lead the Bulldogs, hitting five-of-eight shots from beyond the arc. The senior leads the SAC in scoring (22.6 ppg.) and three-point shooting (59.2 percent).
Jacob Dawkins added 11 points to go along with three rebounds, three blocks and two assists, while
Francis Sio contributed 11 points.
Frankie Johnson contributed six points, seven rebounds, eight assists and two steals for the Bulldogs, while
Dylan Robertson added nine points and pulled down six rebounds.
Coker jumped out to a 14-5 lead over Wingate in the first eight minutes of play. The Bulldogs countered with a 14-0 run to take a five-point lead, getting seven points from Robertson in the spurt. Coker regained a five-point lead at the 2:21 mark on a pair of
Jaylan Robertson free throws, but a three and a dunk from Haskins helped the 'Dogs go to halftime tied 31-31.
Johnson's triple sparked a 7-0 run to give the Bulldogs a 43-38 lead five minutes into the second half. Threes from Dawkins and
Joshua Strozier pushed the lead to eight, but a Marquis Green triple got the Cobras within two at the 9:39 mark. A 9-0 WU run pushed the advantage to double figures late in the half. A dunk and three-point play from Dawkins made it 70-58 with 3:57 remaining. Coker got no closer than six the rest of the way.
The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, hosting Carson-Newman at 4 p.m.
