Both Wingate teams roll to 9-0 victories over Salem International

Wingate, N.C.----Both Wingate University tennis teams cruised to 9-0 victories Wednesday afternoon over visiting Salem International in NCAA Division II tennis action. The Wingate men improve to 4-1 on the season, while the women remain perfect at 5-0 overall.

The Wingate men started the day by sweeping through doubles play, starting with a 9-8 victory at one doubles from senior Josh DuToit (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomore Daniel Belsito (Charlotte, N.C.). Junior Duncan Addison (Halifax, Canada) and freshman Josep Canyadell (Lleida, Spain) won 8-2 at two doubles, while an 8-6 victory at three doubles from freshmen Matthew Jones (Shrewsbury, United Kingdom) and Enrico Giacomini (Vicenza, Italy) gave the 'Dogs a 3-0 lead heading to singles play.

Belsito rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win at one singles, while Canyadell prevailed 6-1, 6-2 at two singles. Jones notched a 6-4, 6-2 victory at number three singles, while Giacomini won 6-2, 6-0 at four singles. Sophomore Tamir Geva (Jerusalem, Israel) prevailed 6-2, 6-1 at number five singles, while Addison capped the day with a 7-5, 7-6 victory at six singles.

The Wingate women also started their day by sweeping doubles play. Sophomore Michela Verpelli (Milan, Italy) teamed with freshman Meredith Lee (Pottstown, Pa.) for an 8-1 victory at one doubles. Junior Claudia De Andreis (Milan, Italy) and Sydney Homan (Huntsville, Ala.) rolled to an 8-0 victory at two doubles, while senior Maria Garcia (San Carlos, Venezuela) teamed with freshman Chyi Lee (Wenshawn District Taipei, Taiwan) to win by the same score at three doubles.

Verpelli cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at one singles, while sophomore Marisa Ostoja (Split, Croatia) prevailed 6-3, 6-1 at two singles. The Bulldogs swept the remaining matches, with Homan, Meredith Lee, Arianna Ceccaroni (Luxemburg) and Garcia picking up 6-0, 6-0 victories at three through six singles.

The Bulldog men are back in action Saturday at Davidson at 9 a.m., while the women return to action Feb. 24, taking on Bluefield State at 2p.m.
