Wingate, N.C.----The 16th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs used a pair of late-inning rallies Saturday afternoon to pick up two victories over Lincoln Memorial University in a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate won the opener 6-5, while prevailing 12-10 in the finale to finish off the weekend sweep in the SAC opener, moving to 13-2 overall and 3-0 in league play. LMU, who entered the weekend on a nine-game winning streak, falls 10-5 overall and 0-3 in the SAC.
Game One: #16 Wingate 6, Lincoln Memorial 5
Junior catcher
Andrew Llewellyn (Moseley, Va.) was two-for-four with a homer and three RBI to lead the Wingate offense in game one. Sophomore
McCann Mellett (Charlotte, N.C.) added a hit, RBI and run scored, while senior outfielder
Ty Andrus (Winston-Salem, N.C.) was three-for-four with a run scored, while junior infielder
Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) added an RBI for the Bulldogs. Junior outfielder
Tanner Forry (York, Pa.) had a double and two runs scored in game one.
Tyler Adams drove in a pair of runs to lead the LMU offense.
Timmy Wages and
Nate Stinson each added a hit and RBI, while
Joe Stucky also drove in a run for the Railsplitters.
Wingate got on the board in the fourth, starting with a one-out double from Forry. Llewellyn drove him home by connecting on his first homer of the year, a two-run shot to left to make it 2-0.
LMU scored twice in the fifth, with a Wages RBI single tying the game 2-2. The Railsplitters scored three times in the sixth, with a two-run double from Adams give LMU a 5-2 advantage.
Forry drew a one-out walk in the sixth, then scored on Llewellyn's RBI single to center to make it 5-3.
The Bulldogs scored three times in the seventh to take the lead.
Reece Daniel (Asheboro, N.C.) started the inning with his second double of the day, then scored on Mellett's pinch-hit RBI single to make it a one-run game. Little's RBI groundout plated Mellett to tie it. Andrus reached on a bunt single, moved to second on an error, went to third on the groundout, then scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
Sophomore right-hander
Alex Rodriguez (Kannapolis, N.C.) got the win, moving to 3-0 on the year. He tossed 2 1/3 shutout innings, striking out three and walking one while allowing three hits. Sophomore right-hander
Josh Karklin (Waxhaw, N.C.) picked up the save, working a scoreless ninth inning with a strikeout.
Dominic Morabito took the loss, falling to 1-2. He allowed a run on two hits in two innings of work, striking out three.
Game Two: #16 Wingate 12, Lincoln Memorial 10
Senior designated hitter
Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) had two homers and five RBI to lead the Wingate offense in game two, while Little added a homer and three RBI. Llewellyn blasted another homer, while Andrus collected three more hits, an RBI and two runs scored. Junior infielder
Tyler Schneider (Richland, Ind.) also had a hit, RBI and run scored.
Adams drove in three runs to lead LMU offense, scoring a pair of runs.
Logan Augustine added an RBI and two runs scored, while Stucky had two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Wages and
Seth Hunt each added an RBI for the Railsplitters.
RBI doubles from Wages and Adams gave LMU a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
The Bulldogs tied it in the second when Llewellyn connected on a towering two-run shot to left center, his second of the day to make it 2-2.
Wingate took a 4-2 lead in the third when Little connected on the first homer of his Bulldog career, a two-run shot to left to put Wingate on top. Reddick's sacrifice fly in the fourth got LMU within one.
The Bulldogs scored four times in the fourth to take an 8-3 advantage. Brown led off the frame with a rocket shot to right center, his fifth of the season to make it 5-3. RBI singles from Andrus and Little made it 7-3, while Schneider was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give Wingate a five-run lead.
LMU scored seven times in the sixth to regain the lead. Moore's RBI single and Hunt's sacrifice fly made it a three-run game, while RBI singles from Stucky and Augustine made it 8-7. Adams gave the Railsplitters a 9-8 advantage with a two-run single, while Adams scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-8.
The Bulldogs had the answer in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four times to retake the lead. Andrus started things with a single, while back-to-back walks loaded the bases with one out for Brown. The senior hit a towering shot to left center, clearing the fence to give Wingate the 12-10 advantage.
Sophomore right-hander
David Nash (Monroe, N.C.) got the win, moving to 1-0 on the year. He tossed one-third scoreless inning in the sixth. Junior right-hander
Lane Wildman (Virginia Beach, Va.) got the save, tossing a hitless ninth inning for his first save of the year.
Wingate is back in action Tuesday, hosting Francis Marion at 3 p.m.
