Both nationally-ranked Bulldog teams pick up victories over Bluefield State

Charlotte, N.C.----Both top-25 Wingate University tennis teams picked up victories Saturday afternoon in Charlotte, prevailing against Bluefield State in NCAA Division II tennis action. The 20th-ranked Wingate women won 9-0, while the 24th-ranked Bulldog men picked up a 7-2 victory.

The Bulldog women swept through doubles play, with juniors Claudia De Andreis (Milan, Italy) and Sydney Homan (Huntsville, Ala.) winning 8-2 at number one doubles. Senior Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) teamed with freshman Chyi Lee (Wenshan District Taipei, Taiwan) for an 8-0 win at number two doubles, while Wingate won by default at three doubles to go ahead 3-0 heading to singles play.

Lee won 6-2, 6-1 at one singles, while sophomore Marisa Ostoja (Split, Croatia) picked up a 6-1, 6-3 victory at two singles. Freshman Meredith Lee (Pottstown, Pa.) prevailed 6-2, 6-0 at three singles, while senior Maria Garcia (San Carlos, Venezuela) and freshman Arianna Ceccaroni (Luxemburg) rolled to 6-0, 6-0 wins at four and five singles. Freshman Marissa Marks (Germantown, Wisc.) won by default at six singles to finish off the sweep.

The Wingate men swept doubles play Saturday afternoon, with senior Josh DuToit (Charlotte, N.C.) teaming with sophomore Daniel Belsito (Charlotte, N.C.) for a 9-7 win at one doubles. Junior Duncan Addison (Halifax, Canada) and freshman Josep Canyadell (Lleida, Spain) notched an 8-4 win at two doubles, while freshmen Matthew Jones (Shrewsbury, United Kingdom) and Enrico Giacomini (Vicenza, Italy) prevailed 8-6 at three doubles to put the Bulldogs on top 3-0 heading to singles play.

Belsito stayed perfect against Division II opponents with a 7-6, 6-3 win at one singles, while Jones rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory at four singles. DuToit also rallied at five singles, prevailing 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 while sophomore Tamir Geva (Jerusalem, Israel) won 6-7, 7-6, 1-0 at six singles.

Both Wingate teams are back in action Tuesday, opening SAC play at 1 p.m. against Anderson.
