Both top-25 Wingate teams roll to sweeps at Carson-Newman

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Jefferson City, Tenn.----The 20th-ranked Wingate University women's tennis team won their 62nd straight league match Saturday afternoon, rolling to a 9-0 victory at Carson-Newman University in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action. The 24th-ranked Bulldog men also stayed perfect in league play with an equally convincing 9-0 victory over the Eagles. Both teams improve to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

Wingate's number one women's doubles team of sophomore Michela Verpelli (Milan, Italy) and freshman Meredith Lee (Pottstown, Pa.) won 8-5, while junior Claudia De Andreis (Milan, Italy) and Sydney Homan (Huntsville, Ala.) cruised to an 8-2 win at two doubles. Senior Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) teamed with freshman Chyi Lee (Wenshan District Taipei, Taiwan) for an 8-3 victory at three doubles.

Verpelli won 5-7, 6-2, 10-3 at one singles, while De Andreis prevailed 6-2, 7-5 at two singles. Meredith Lee picked up a 6-3, 6-3 victory at three singles, with Womeodu winning 8-2 at four singles. Sophomore Marisa Ostoja (Split, Croatia) won 6-4, 6-4 at number five singles, while Homan prevailed 8-3 at six singles.

Wingate's 11th-ranked men's doubles team of Josh DuToit (Charlotte, N.C.) and Daniel Belsito (Charlotte, N.C.) won 8-1 at number one doubles, while junior Duncan Addison (Halifax, Canada) teamed with freshman Josep Canyadell (Lleida, Spain) for an 8-6 victory at two doubles. Freshmen Matthew Jones (Shrewsbury, United Kingdom) and Enrico Giacomini (Vicenza, Italy) notched an 8-3 victory at three doubles to give Wingate a 3-0 lead heading to singles play.

Belsito won 6-2, 6-3 at one singles, while Canyadell added a 7-5, 6-1 victory at two singles. Jones prevailed 6-4, 6-3 at number three singles, with Giacomini winning 6-4, 6-2 at four singles. Sophomore Tamir Geva (Jerusalem, Israel) and Addison finished the day with 8-4 and 8-6 victories at five and six singles.

Both Wingate teams are back in action Wednesday, hosting Lenoir-Rhyne at 2 p.m.
