Hartsville, S.C.----The 22nd-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs stayed perfect in league play Tuesday afternoon, rolling to an 8-1 victory at Coker College in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action. Wingate moves to 12-3 overall and 5-0 in the SAC, while the Cobras fall to 5-6 overall and 0-3 in league play.
The Bulldogs went 2-1 in doubles play, getting an 8-2 victory at one doubles from senior
Maria Garcia (San Carlos, Venezuela) and sophomore
Michela Verpelli (Milan, Italy). Freshmen
Chyi Lee (Wenshan District Taipei, Taiwan) and
Meredith Lee (Pottstown, Pa.) added an 8-2 win at three doubles to give Wingate a 2-1 lead heading to singles play.
Verpelli won 6-2, 6-2 at one singles, with junior
Claudia De Andreis (Milan, Italy) prevailing 6-1, 6-3 at two singles. Chyi Lee picked up a 6-3, 6-1 victory at number three singles, while senior
Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) won 8-3 at four singles. Sophomore
Marisa Ostoja (Split, Croatia) prevailed 8-4 at five singles, with junior
Sydney Homan (Huntsville, Ala.) wrapping up a perfect day of singles play with an 8-2 win at six singles.
Wingate is back in action Saturday, traveling to Queens for a SAC showdown at 1 p.m. The Royals are ranked 38th nationally and are 5-0 in league play.
