Brown leads the way as ‘Dogs take series at Newberry with doubleheader split

Newberry, S.C.----Wingate University senior designated hitter Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) had two homers, a double and six RBI in game two Saturday afternoon, leading the Bulldogs to a 13-9 victory at Newberry College, after the Wolves rallied to take game one 4-3 in the South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader. Wingate moves to 33-12 overall and 16-8 in the SAC, while the Wolves go to 23-20 overall and 12-12 in league play.

Game One: Newberry 4, Wingate 3

Colin Allman went three-for-four with three RBI to lead the Newberry offense. Danton Hyman added two hits and two runs scored in game one.

Senior outfielder Ty Andrus (Winston-Salem, N.C.) was two-for-five with an RBI and a run scored. Junior catcher Andrew Llewellyn (Moseley, Va.) added a hit and an RBI, while junior infielder Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) was two-for-four with a double.

Newberry jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Allman's two-run single. Junior outfielder Tanner Forry (York, Pa.) drew a lead-off walk in the second, then scored on an RBI single from Andrus to get Wingate within a run.

The Bulldogs struck twice in the seventh to take the lead. Andrus led off the frame with a single, then moved to second on a sacrifice and scored when a Tyler Schneider (Richland, Ind.) single was mishandled in the outfield. Llewellyn added a two-out, RBI single to plate Schneider and give Wingate a 3-2 advantage.

Newberry tied it in the eighth on Allman's two-out, RBI single. A Single and walk started the bottom of the ninth, while a sacrifice and groundout put runners on second and third with two outs. The Bulldogs were then ready to intentionally walk Hyman to load the bases, but the first pitch was wild, allowing Colin Santiago to score the winning run.

Charlie Fessler got the win, moving to 3-0. He tossed one shutout inning with a strikeout. Sophomore right-hander Josh Karklin (Waxhaw, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 3-1. He allowed a run on two hits in one-third of an inning. Junior right-hander Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) allowed three runs on eight hits in 7 2/3 innings, striking out five.

Game Two: Wingate 13, Newberry 9

Brown was three-for-four with two homers, a double, six RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate offense in game two. Senior outfielder Trent Wynn (New Bern, N.C.) added a homer and three RBI, while Schneider added two hits, an RBI and two runs scored. Senior infielder Brett Branton (Athens, Ga.) added a hit and an RBI, while Andrus also drove in a run in game two.

Derek Olenchuk was three-for-five with two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Newberry offense. Hyman added two hits and two RBI, while Ben Herring also drove in a pair of runs. Sam Jones contributed a hit, RBI and run scored for the Wolves.

Sophomore infielder McCann Mellett (Charlotte, N.C.) reached on a one-out single in the top of the first, then scored on Brown's 13th homer of the season, a two-run shot to right. Olenchuk's RBI double in the bottom of the first got Newberry on the board, while Herring's two-run double gave the Wolves a 3-2 lead.

Little led off the third with a double, then scored on Schneider's RBI single to tie it. Hyman's RBI single in the fourth put the Wolves back on top 4-3.

The Bulldogs used a two-out rally to regain the lead in the fifth. Mellett and Schneider reached on back-to-back two-out singles to keep the inning alive for Brown, who connected on his second homer of the day, third of the weekend, 14th of the season and 49th of his career to give Wingate a 6-4 lead.

Newberry had the answer in the bottom of the frame, scoring three times to take a 7-6 advantage on an RBI single from Jones.

Wingate scored twice in the sixth to take the lead back. Two Newberry errors allowed the first run to score, while an Andrus RBI single put the 'Dogs on top 8-7.

The Bulldogs added insurance in the seventh, scoring five times to take a 13-7 lead. Brown just missed his third homer of the day, ripping an RBI double off the top of the wall in right center to start the scoring. The senior now has 51 RBI on the year. Branton added an RBI single, while a big three-run blast form Wynn gave Wingate a six-run cushion.

Newberry got RBI singles from Hyman and Olenchuk in the bottom of the seventh, but a double play ended the contest.

Senior right-hander Jimmy Doolittle (Charlotte, N.C.) got the win in relief, tossing one shutout inning in relief to move to 3-0. Sophomore right-hander David Nash (Monroe, N.C.) struck out the only batter he faced in the sixth to strand a pair of runners in a one-run game, then finished out the game for his first save of the season. Ryan Harbin took the loss, allowing eight runs on eight hits in six innings, striking out six and walking one.

Wingate is back in action Tuesday, hosting UNC Pembroke at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs wrap up league play next weekend against Catawba. Wingate will enter the final weekend one game behind the first-place Indians in the league standings.
