Eagles ride hot second half to victory over Bulldogs

Box Score Jefferson City, Tenn.----The Carson-Newman University Eagles shot 50 percent from beyond the arc in the second half, outscoring visiting Wingate University 49-36 in the final 20 minutes en route to a 92-78 victory in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action. Carson-Newman improves to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 4-4 on the season and 0-3 in league play.

KEY STATS

- CN shot 45 percent from the field, hitting 11-of-25 threes (44 percent)
- Wingate shot 43 percent from the field, connecting on nine-of-22 threes (41 percent)
- The Eagles held a 38-35 rebounding advantage and 13-8 edge in second-chance points
- CN was 31-for-40 at the free throw line; Wingate was 17-for-27
- Carson-Newman scored 19 points off 12 WU turnovers

KEY BULLDOGS

- Jarren Cottingham had 14 points, going seven-for-10 at the free throw line
- Miguel Priest added 13 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal
- Rashaard Pringle contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds
- Frankie Johnson had nine points, three boards, an assist, a steal and a block

FIRST HALF

- Carson-Newman jumped out to a 6-0 lead three minutes in
- A Dmitrii Bykov three put the Eagles on top 18-4
- A Zailan Peeler triple pushed the lead to 14 midway through the half
- Wingate answered with a 26-9 run to take the lead
- Johnson knocked down three triples in the spurt
- A jumper and three from Sio put WU on top 38-35 with 3:18 left in the half
- Pringle's dunk put Wingate on top 42-40 but a Peeler three in the final seconds gave CN a one-point halftime lead

SECOND HALF

- A 7-0 run gave CN a 55-48 lead five minutes in
- A Kendrick Tucker bucket got WU back within five at the 13:15 mark
- The Eagles used a 9-0 run, capped by two Jaylan McGill free throws made it 67-53
- Two Priest free throws got the 'Dogs back within 10 at the midway point
- McGill's three pushed the Carson-Newman lead to 15
- Cottingham hit a three to trim it to 11, but Kamil Chapman answered with a three
- Bykov's layup at the 4:50 mark put CN back on top by 15
- Wingate got no closer than 14 the rest of the way
