Indians use late rally to knock off #15 Wingate 13-9

Box Score Salisbury, N.C.----The Catawba College Indians scored the game's final four goals Wednesday night, knocking off the 15th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs 13-9 in South Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse action. The Indians improve to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs see their five-game winning streak come to an end, falling to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in league play.

KEY BULLDOGS

- Conor Gronbach had three goals and an assist to lead the Wingate offense
- Ryan Ormerod added two goals and an assist
- Bobby Padden also scored a pair of goals for the Bulldogs, adding three caused turnovers

- Joe Cooper contributed a goal and an assist
- Alex Cordero collected 14 saves
- Sean Moran piled up eight ground balls
- Wyatt Weiseman won 12-of-24 face-offs while picking up seven ground balls

FIRST PERIOD

- Catawba scored four minutes in, but Ormerod's goal at the 7:47 mark tied it 1-1
- The Indians scored the final three goals of the frame, taking a 4-1 lead on a Cole Fanzo goal

SECOND PERIOD

- Goals from Padden and Gronbach got the 'Dogs within one midway through the frame
- Fanzo scored again at the 4:25 mark, but Gronbach's goal two minutes later got WU back within one
- Trevor Bellotte scored with 22 seconds left to give Catawba a 6-4 halftime lead

THIRD PERIOD

- Llerandi scored off Cooper's assist three minutes in to make it 7-5, but another Fanzo goal put Catawba back on to by three
- Goals from Padden and Ormerod got Wingate within one at 8-7 at the 4:56 mark
- Joe Barber gave the Indians a 9-7 advantage with six minutes left in the frame
- Gronbach and Cooper scored in a two-minute span to tie it 9-9 with 2:51 to go
- Barber scored with 14 seconds left to give the Indians a 10-9 lead heading to the final frame

FOURTH PERIOD

- Catawba outscored Wingate 3-0 in the final frame
- Goals from Fanzo and Robert Morrison made it 12-9 with four minutes left
- Fanzo capped the scoring at the 3:38 mark with his fifth goal of the evening

UP NEXT

- Wingate is back in action Saturday, traveling to Mount Olive to face the #13 Trojans at 1 p.m.
- The 'Dogs are at Lincoln Memorial the following Saturday at 3 p.m.
- The Bulldogs return home April 6 at 4 p.m., hosting Newberry
