Sizzling Bulldogs knock down 18 threes in 103-84 road win at Catawba

Salisbury, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs knocked down 18 threes on 50 percent shooting Saturday afternoon, picking up a 104-83 victory at Catawba College in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action. Wingate improves to 1-2 overall and 1-2 in the SAC, while the Indians fall to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.

KEY STATS

- The Bulldogs shot 50 percent from the field; Catawba shot 40 percent
- WU hit 18-of-36 threes (50 percent); the Indians were 11-for-39 from distance (28 percent)
- Wingate held a 50-44 rebounding advantage; Catawba had the 19-12 edge in second-chance points

FIRST HALF

- Threes from Priest and Cottingham helped Wingate race out to a 10-5 lead
- Terrence Whitfield hit a three to get Catawba within a point at the 16:23 mark
- The 'Dogs scored the next eight points, taking a 20-11 lead on a Nixon layup three minutes later
- Catawba pulled back within six, but a Pringle triple made it 29-20 at the midway point
- Wingate used a 7-0 run to stretch the lead to 13 with eight minutes to go
- Nixon started the flurry with a three then capped it with a layup
- Catawba answered with an 8-0 run, cutting the lead to five on a Whitfield layup at the 6:14 mark
- Pringle knocked down another triple to push the lead back to 10; Tucker's three made it 47-36
- Nixon drilled a three with 1:40 remaining to give the 'Dogs a 50-38 advantage
-  A Marcus Burwell three in the final minute got Catawba within seven at halftime at 50-43

SECOND HALF

- Burwell's layup got Catawba within three early in the second half at 55-52
- The 'Dogs scored the next eight points, getting back-to-back Priest threes to go on top by 11
- Carter Phillips hit a three to pull the Indians within five at the 12:44 mark
- Sio and Cottingham answered with triples in the next 30 seconds to give WU a 76-65 lead
- Another Cottingham three put the Bulldogs on top by 12 with 11 minutes remaining
- Cottingham buried another triple at the 8:03 mark, while a Tucker layup put Wingate on top by 15
- A Nixon layup and two Clark free throws gave the 'Dogs a 96-79 advantage with 5:40 to go
- Two Cottingham free throws at the 1:43 mark made it 100-84 while a Pringle triple capped the scoring
