Bulldogs down Cobras for second SAC win in three days

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs had 11 different players score Wednesday night, picking up their second league win in three days by taking down visiting Coker University 66-54 in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate improves to 3-4 overall and 3-3 in the SAC, while the Cobras fall to 3-7 overall and 3-6 in league play.

KEY STATS

- Wingate shot 34 percent from the field; the Cobras shot 35 percent on the night  
- The Bulldogs were nine-for-19 from three-point range (47 percent); Coker was seven-for-24 from distance (29 percent)
- The 'Dogs held a 50-30 rebounding advantage and 19-6 edge in second-chance points
- Both teams went 13-for-15 at the free throw line
- Wingate held a 20-18 advantage in points in the paint
- The Bulldogs turned 20 Coker turnovers into 12 points, both teams collected 8 steals
- The Wingate bench outscored Coker's bench 29-11 on the night

FIRST QUARTER

- Coker scored the first seven, taking a 7-0 lead on an Ahlea Myers triple less than two minutes in
- A Wilson three and Hurley jumper pulled Wingate within two at 9-7
- The 'Dogs used an 8-0 run to take a 15-11 lead, starting with a Troutman three-point play and capped by a Wilson triple
- Hope Richardson's three-point play put Coker up 16-15 with 1:29 to go
- Crump's jumper in the final minute gave WU the 17-16 lead

SECOND QUARTER

- Wingate scored the first nine points of the second quarter, taking a 26-16 lead on a Destiny Coleman jumper at the 4:20 mark
- Coker scored its first two points at the line with 3:48 to go
- Sullivan answered with a triple, while two Troutman free throws put WU on top by 13 with two minutes left
- The Cobras lone field goal of the frame was a Je'Nya Wilder three with 47 seconds left, making it 31-21

THIRD QUARTER

- The 'Dogs used a 10-0 run to take an 18-point lead less than four minutes in
- Whiteside hit two threes in the spurt, making it 42-24
- Coker answered by scoring the next 15 points, cutting the lead to three on an Emily Davis three with 2:49 left
- Hannah Clark buried a three to push the lead back to six, while buckets from Crump and Wilson the final minute made it 51-42 heading to the fourth

FOURTH QUARTER

- A Raya Coley jumper pulled the Cobras within seven in the opening seconds
- Sullivan answered with a triple, but a Saquita Joyner three made it 54-47 at the 8:30 mark
- Wingate scored the next eight, getting threes from Crump and Hatfield to go on top 62-47 at the midway point
- The Cobras got no closer than 12 the rest of the way

UP NEXT

- Wingate is back in action Saturday, playing its third game of the week at 2 p.m. against Anderson
