Wingate rally comes up just short in 72-67 setback against Anderson

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs battled back from a 15-point fourth-quarter deficit Saturday afternoon, tying it in the final minutes before visiting Anderson University responded to hang on for the 72-67 victory in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. The Trojans improve to 7-4 overall and 6-3 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 3-5 overall and 3-4 in league play.

KEY STATS

- Anderson shot 49 percent from the field; Wingate shot 34 percent
- The Trojans hit seven-of-19 threes (37 percent); the 'Dogs hit four-of-16 from deep (25 percent)
- WU held a 39-35 rebounding advantage and 18-17 edge in second-chance points
- Wingate converted 17 AU turnovers into 21 points, holding a 13-2 advantage in fast-break points
- The Bulldogs had eight steals compared to Anderson's seven; the Trojans had all nine blocks

FIRST QUARTER

- Threes from Wilson and Aliyah Whiteside gave Wingate an early 8-2 lead
- A three and a layup from Alexis Tate put the Trojans on top 11-10 at the midway point
- Maggie Campbell added a triple to push the Anderson lead to three
- Clark's layup cut the lead to one, but a Jalyn Spurlin bucket with 1:02 left put AU on top 22-17
- Lauren Sullivan's layup in the final seconds pulled the 'Dogs within three heading to the second

SECOND QUARTER

- Cutter's layup a minute in gave the Trojans a 26-19 advantage
- Davis's three-point play cut the lead in half, but a Britney Bailey bucket at the 6:49 mark made it 30-22
- Hatfield and Davis answered with buckets to pull Wingate back within four
- Hatfield buried a three with 3:05 left to tie it at 35
- Two Bailey buckets put AU on top by four, but buckets from Clark and Coleman in the final minute tied it at 37 at halftime

THIRD QUARTER

- Anderson went on a 13-0 run in a six-minute span to take a 14-point lead
- Cutter capped the spurt with two free throws with 18 seconds left, making it 56-42
- Wilson's jumper in the final seconds pulled the Bulldogs within 12 heading to the final frame

FOURTH QUARTER

- A Mckenzie Gadson triple two minutes in put AU on top 61-46
- Hatfield's three-point play and two Davis free throws cut the lead to 10
- Taylor Hair's bucket pushed the AU advantage back to 12 with 5:28 left
- The Bulldogs answered with a 14-2 run over the next four minutes to tie it
- Davis started it with a layup and two free throws, while a Daphney Saylor bucket pulled WU within two
- Davis's two free throws with 1:45 remaining tied it at 65
- A Hair free throw and layup put the Trojans up by three with 46 seconds left
- Gadson added two more free throws 15 seconds later to make it 70-65
- Coleman pulled WU back within three with two free throws with 19 seconds left
- The Bulldogs got no closer the rest of the way
