Wolves rally for 75-74 victory over Bulldogs

Newberry, S.C.----The Newberry College Wolves outscored visiting Wingate University 23-10 in the fourth quarter Wednesday night, rallying for a 75-74 victory in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action. The Wolves improve to 2-5 overall and 2-5 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in league play.

- Wingate shot 44 percent from the field; Newberry shot 42 percent
- The Wolves hit 11-of-24 threes (46 percent); the 'Dogs were five-for-13 (39 percent)

FIRST QUARTER

- A jumper and two free throws from Clark gave Wingate an 11-8 lead midway through the first
- Whiteside buried a three to push the advantage to five
- Troutman's layup and three-point play gave the 'Dogs a 19-11 lead with two minutes to go
- A Mylaysia Gates triple pulled the Wolves within three a minute later
- Wingate scored the final five points, getting a Troutman layup and two Davis free throws for a 24-16 lead

SECOND QUARTER

- A Courtney Virgo three pulled Newberry to within three in the opening minute of the second quarter
- Hatfield knocked down a three at the 6:38 mark to push the advantage back to six
- Alexis Miller connected on two free throws with three minutes left to make it 32-29
- A Virgo three pulled the Wolves within two, but Sullivan answered with a triple
- Two Keli Romas free throws in the final seconds cut Wingate's lead to 43-40 heading to halftime

THIRD QUARTER

- Layups from Clark and Hatfield put WU on top 51-45 at the 6:17 mark
- Clark added a jumper to push the lead to eight at the midway point
- A Davis layup and Sullivan triple put the Bulldogs on top by 10 with 1:23 remaining
- A Hatfield layup and Clark jumper in the final minute put WU on top 64-52 heading to the fourth

FOURTH QUARTER

- Virgo's triple two minutes in pulled Newberry within six at 66-60
- Destiny Coleman's jumper and a Hatfield three-point play pushed the WU lead to nine with 6:44 left
- Two buckets from Ericka Wiseley cut the lead to four with 4:31 to go
- Hatfield's free throw with 3:34 remaining made it 74-69; Wingate would not score the rest of the way
- Kelsey Brett's three with 3:11 left made it a two-point game
- A Romas jumper a minute later tied it at 74
- A Brett triple with three seconds left was missed, but Wiseley got the rebound and drew a foul
- She hit the second free throw to make it 75-74 with 1.2 seconds left
- Davis's contested runner at the buzzer was off the mark

- Wingate is back in action next Monday, hosting Newberry at 4 p.m.
