Maggie Young has been named the AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, league officials announced Monday morning. Young earns Player of the Week accolades for the first time in her career.
Young had a big week to anchor the league's top defense. She piled up 11 blocks in just six sets of action, helping the Bulldogs pick up a pair of SAC sweeps to push their winning streak to seven. Young had four solo blocks and seven block assists on the weekend, adding five kills, five digs and four aces.
Young started the weekend by notching two solo blocks and three block assists in the sweep over LMU, adding three aces and two kills while helping Wingate hold the Railsplitters to a .128 hitting percentage. Young piled up six blocks in Saturday's sweep over Carson-Newman, with a pair of solo blocks and four block assists as the 'Dogs held the Eagles to a hitting percentage of .091. Young added three kills, three digs and an ace in the sweep over Carson-Newman.
Young leads the SAC with a .333 hitting percentage, ranking 16th in the conference with 0.76 blocks per set while contributing 2.38 kills per set. She has played a key role in Wingate leading the league in opponents' hitting percentage.
Wingate is back in action this weekend, traveling to UVA Wise Friday for a 7 p.m. start. The 'Dogs are at Tusculum Saturday at 2 p.m.
