Elmore’s three caps Wingate’s comeback in 79-77 win over Catawba

Wingate, N.C.----Sean Elmore's three-pointer with one-tenth of a second left on the clock capped a Bulldog comeback that saw Wingate University close the game on 17-4 run including scoring the final seven points in a dramatic 79-77 victory over visiting Catawba College in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate wins its third straight, moving to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the SAC. The Indians fall to 2-6 overall and 1-5 in league play.

FIRST HALF

- Cottingham's three-point play gave Wingate a 15-8 lead six minutes in

- A Myles Washington jumper at the 10:27 mark cut the lead to three
- A Kris Robinson triple put the Indians on top 25-22 with 6:24 remaining
- A Taylor dunk put Wingate back on top, but a Trevion Lamar three made it 28-26
- Back-to-back Cottingham layups put WU on top by four with two minutes left
- Elmore's triple with 17 seconds left made it 40-35 at halftime

SECOND HALF

- The lead went back and forth for the first 10 minutes of the second half
- Catawba hit three straight threes, with a Washington triple making it 61-52 at the 9:25 mark
- Taylor's dunk cut the lead to five at the 6:43 mark
- Lamar's triple with five minutes left put Catawba on top 70-60
- Robinson's three a minute later put the Indians on top by 11
- A Cottingham steal and dunk, followed by Nixon's three-point play pulled WU within five
- Gerald Peyton's dunk put Catawba on top 76-69 with 2:16 to go
- Elmore answered with a three to cut the lead to four
- Elmore's layup made it 77-74 with 1:14 left
- Cottingham knocked down two free throws with 38 seconds left to pull Wingate within a point
- The 'Dogs got the stop on the other end, getting it back with eight seconds left
- Cottingham drove into the lane, then found an open Elmore at the top of the key
- He buried the triple with one-tenth of a second left, giving WU the 79-77 win
