Five Bulldogs hit double figures as Wingate downs Mars Hill 87-65

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs had five different players score at least 12 points Monday night, rolling to an 87-65 victory over Mars Hill University in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate improves to 8-8 overall and 7-7 in the SAC, while the Lions fall to 2-14 overall and 2-14 in league play.

KEY STATS

- Wingate shot 49 percent from the field; Mars Hill shot 36 percent
- The 'Dogs hit seven-of-17 threes (41 percent); the Lions were nine-for-30 from deep (30 percent)
- The Bulldogs held a dominant 47-29 rebounding advantage and 17-8 edge in second-chance points
- WU outscored MHU 42-14 in the paint and scored 19 points off 14 Mars Hill turnovers
- The 'Dogs piled up 21 assists on 34 made field goals

- Jaia Wilson piled up 12 points, nine assists, four boards and a steal

FIRST QUARTER

- Saylor and Troutman each had two early buckets, while a Hatfield three gave WU an 11-3 lead
- Kyla Daniels pulled Mars Hill within four with a triple at the midway point
- Coleman's jumper pushed the advantage back to eight for the Bulldogs
- Wilson's free throw with four seconds left gave WU a 21-13 lead heading to the second

SECOND QUARTER

- A Hatfield layup and two Davis buckets gave the 'Dogs a 12-point lead two minutes into the second
- Wilson's three-point play made it 30-17 with under seven minutes left
- Whiteside knocked down a triple at the 2:14 mark to put Wingate on top by 16
- A Wilson triple made it 42-23 with a minute to go
- De'Ja Marshall hit two free throws in the final seconds to get MHU within 16 at 44-28

THIRD QUARTER

- Whiteside's jumper a minute into the fourth made it 48-30
- Daniels pulled the Lions within 15 with a triple
- Wingate scored the next six, getting a layup and two free throws from Davis to take a 21-point lead
- Coleman's bucket at the 4:09 mark made it 58-36
- A Daniels bucket two minutes later trimmed the deficit to 15
- Two Hatfield free throws and a Wilson triple put the 'Dogs back on top by 20
- Alexis Pardue's free throws in the last second made it 68-50 heading to the fourth

FOURTH QUARTER

- Marshall pulled the Lions to within 14 with a  jumper at the 7:56 mark
- Wingate scored the next six, with four of those points coming from Troutman to go back up by 20
- Two more Troutman buckets and a Davis jumper put Wingate on top 85-62 with two minutes left
- Wilson's layup with 46 seconds left gave the 'Dogs a 25-point advantage

- Wingate is back in action Wednesday, traveling to Anderson for a 5:30 p.m. start
- The 'Dogs are at UVA Wise Saturday afternoon
- WU is back home next Wednesday, hosting Catawba at 5:30 p.m. to wrap up the regular season
