Wingate’s Grossi is second at the SAC Preview; ’Dogs are fourth on team charts

Hickory, N.C.----The Wingate University men's golf team is fourth after 36 holes of the LR Fall Invite/South Atlantic Conference Preview, hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne University at the Lake Hickory Country Club (Catawba Springs course). The first-round co-leaders, Wingate tallied a 592 Monday. The Bulldogs had a morning score of 289 and an afternoon tally of 303.
 
Wingate freshman Filippo Grossi is in second place, thanks to his 139. He was the first-round leader with his five-under-par 67. Grossi carded an even-par 72 in the second round. Bulldog sophomore Colin Dutton was the model of consistency, posting back-to-back scores of one-under-par 71 for a two-round total of 142. Dutton is tied for fourth place.
 
The Lander University B team occupies the top spot on the leader board with a 36-hole total of 585. The Bearcats had a 296 in the morning round and a 289 in the afternoon session. Host Lenoir-Rhyne and St. Thomas Aquinas (STAC) are tied for second, one stroke back at 586. STAC sophomore Nolan Skaggs is the 36-hole leader with his six-under-par 138.
 
Sixteen teams and 90 student-athletes are participating in the LR Fall Invite/South Atlantic Conference Preview. The Lake Hickory Country Club is the host venue for the 2023 SAC men's golf championships, slated for April 16-18.

Wingate/Tournament notes

- Wingate played the par fives at 4.78 (minus-nine), first on the team statistical ledgers
- Grossi (4.25, minus-six) and Dutton (4.38, minus-five) are tied for second and fourth, respectively, on the par fives
- The Bulldogs played the par threes at 3.18 (plus-seven), third on the team charts
- Grossi tied for first with his par threes' score of 2.75 (minus-two)
- Wingate had 108 pars (tied for second) and 27 birdies (tied for fourth)
- Grossi's 11 birdies tied STAC's Skaggs for the top spot on the tourney list
- Hillsdale (Mich.) is fifth on team leader board with its 36-hole total of 593
- Sandhills Community College and Findlay (Ohio) are sixth (597) and seventh (601), respectively
- Spots eight through 10 are occupied by North Greenville (604), Charleston, W.Va. (606) and Lenoir-Rhyne B (608)
- The LR Fall Invite/SAC Preview concludes Tuesday morning with the third and final round
- The third-round shotgun start is slated for 8:30 a.m.
