Wingate suffers first loss of season at Lander

Greenwood, S.C. —- The Wingate University men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the
2022-23 season Saturday afternoon, falling 87-76 at Lander University in NCAA Division II
men's basketball action. The Bearcats improve to 4-0 overall on the season, while the Bulldogs
drop to 2-1 on the year.

KEY STATS
- Lander shot 49 percent from the field, while Wingate made 42 percent of its attempts
- The Bearcats were five-for-22 (23 percent) from three-point range; the Bulldogs were six-of-29
(21 percent) from deep
- WU made 20 of 25 (80 percent) of its free throw attempts, while LU was 20-for-26 (77 percent)
from the charity stripe
- Lander out-rebounded Wingate 37-33; both teams scored nine points off second chance
- The Bearcats scored 18 points off 18 WU turnovers; the Bulldogs turned 13 LU turnovers into
17 points
- Lander's bench out-scored Wingate's 50-31
- The Bearcats out-scored the Bulldogs 46-32 in the paint

KEY BULLDOGS
- Jarren Cottingham led the Bulldogs with 20 points, four assists and two steals
- Andreas Wilson added 17 points and a team-high six rebounds
- Donell Nixon scored 11 points off nine-of-10 shooting from the foul line with four rebounds
and two steals
- Josh Massey was the fourth Bulldog in double figures with 10 points

FIRST HALF
- The teams traded baskets to open the game, as Wingate led 6-4 just over two minutes in
- Lander scored six unanswered points from there, taking a 10-6 lead
- Back-to-back buckets from Chandler Lindsey gave the Bearcats a seven-point lead at the
14:37 mark
- Noah Dunn's three-pointer put LU up 27-15 at the midway point
- The 'Dogs answered back with a quick 9-2 run to cut the deficit to five
- Cottingham's layup brought Wingate within four at the 2:18 mark
- The Bulldogs took a 39-36 deficit into the halftime locker room after a Massey bucket with 20
seconds to go

SECOND HALF
- Sean Elmore's three-pointer to open the second half tied the game, the closest the Bulldogs
had come since a 6-4 lead
- The 'Dogs and Bearcats tied two other times in the following three minutes
- A quick 7-2 run gave Lander a five-point cushion with 12 and a half minutes to go
- Wilson's three and a dunk brought the 'Dogs back within a point just a couple minutes later
- A 9-0 from the Bearcats pushed their lead back to nine with eight minutes left
- Jacob Cooper's and-one extended the LU lead to 14 points under the six-minute mark
- Wingate responded with a 10-2 run over the next 2:24 to get within six
- The Bearcats came back with five straight points to return to a double-digit lead
- Both sides traded baskets the rest of the way, as Lander held on for the 11-point win
