Anderson, S.C.----Wingate University graduate student thrower Elliot Zirwas won the men's shot put in the South Atlantic Conference outdoor track and field championships Friday at the Anderson University Track Complex. Zirwas made three visits to the awards podium during the league event, helping the Bulldogs finish second out of 12 teams.

In his first Friday action, Zirwas won the shot put with his mark of 17.69 meters. Later in the day, he finished second in the discus with his 47.33-meter effort. On Thursday, Zirwas claimed third place in the hammer throw with his personal-best mark of 51.17 meters.

Zirwas has the ninth-best shot put mark in the NCAA Division II this season, thanks to his school-record throw of 18.38 meters at the Charlotte 49er Classic in March. The Bulldogs will send approximately 30 student-athletes to the Lee University Last Chance Meet next weekend, hoping to add to their list of NCAA qualifiers.
