Delaney Schappert named Wingate Women’s Lacrosse Assistant Coach

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University head women's lacrosse coach Abby Wiley has announced the promotion of Delaney Schappert to assistant coach. Schappert has spent the last two years as the women's lacrosse graduate assistant coach. She begins her role as the assistant coach this week.

"I am so excited to stay on staff here working under Coach Wiley," Schappert says. "I have learned so much the past two years from her, given she has received SAC Coach of the Year the past two seasons, she is a great mentor to not only me but our team. Coach Wiley is a great leader, coach and friend. I am excited to continue to learn even more from her. I can't wait to get back to work with this team, each day the girls continue to impress me with their grit and hard work."

In her two years on the Wingate staff, the Bulldogs have thrived, going 26-7 overall and 16-3 in league play. The 'Dogs went 11-3 in 2021, going 7-2 in SAC play while setting a program record for goals-against average. Wingate followed by going 15-4 in 2022, with a 9-1 SAC record. The 'Dogs set a program record for wins, earned their first-ever IWLCA ranking, advanced to the second SAC title game in program history and appeared in their first-ever NCAA Tournament. Wingate finished the season ranked 16th in the national poll.

"I am thrilled to move Delaney into the role as our full-time assistant coach," Wiley says. "Her work ethic, passion, and dedication to our program the last two years has been phenomenal. She brings a wide range of knowledge on the defensive side as well as helping our goalies. I believe she will thrive in this new role, Wingate lacrosse is very lucky to have her. Delaney has done a wonderful job with bringing new ideas to our program and constantly keeps me on my toes. I can honestly say that she has made me a better coach the last two years she has been with us."

Schappert enjoyed a standout playing career in high school and college. She played high school lacrosse at Eastport South Manor on Long Island N.Y. From there, she took her lacrosse career to Bloomsburg University. During her time at Bloomsburg, Schappert was a four-year starter for the women's lacrosse program. She registered over 100 ground balls and 74 caused turnovers before her season was cut short due to COVID-19. Schappert became team captain her junior year, helping her team lead the nation in caused turnovers.

Schappert graduated with a bachelor's degree in Communication Studies in May 2020 from Bloomsburg. She earned her master's of arts in sport management at Wingate this past May. The past two summers, Schappert has worked as a coach with Lax on Elite, a club team on Long Island, N.Y.
