Owen Marshall named National Scholar Player of the Year; two Bulldogs earn Scholar All-America honors

Kansas City, Mo.----Wingate University All-American defender Owen Marshall has hauled in another major honor, being named the National Scholar Player of the Year by the United Soccer Coaches. Marshall is a first team Scholar All-American, with Harry Bircumshaw earning second team accolades.

The duo helped lead Wingate to its second straight regular season SAC title. The Bulldogs went 12-5-2 overall and 9-1-1 in the SAC, advancing to the SAC title match and earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Marshall earned first team All-SAC accolades, while also picking up All-Region honors. He was named the SAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2022, while also earning third team Academic All-America accolades. Marshall was a consensus first team All-American last season. This year, Marshall helped the 'Dogs rank second in the SAC in goals-against average during league play, starting all 19 games while playing over 1,650 minutes on the year. Marshall accumulated a 3.80 GPA, majoring in Accounting.

Bircumshaw adds this honor to All-SAC and All-Region accolades in his first year with the Bulldogs. The midfielder was another key factor in one of the league's top defenses, while also collecting a goal and three assists on the year. He scored a goal in the Newberry victory, while handing out assists in SAC wins over Lenoir-Rhyne, Tusculum and Anderson. He has posted a 4.0 GPA, majoring in Accounting.
