Eagles ride big second half to victory at Wingate

Wingate, N.C.---- The Carson-Newman University Eagles outscored Wingate University 51-33 in the second half Saturday evening, shooting 63 percent from the field and 64 percent from deep en route to an 87-68 victory in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action at Cuddy Arena. The Eagles improve to 12-14 overall and 6-10 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 15-10 overall and 10-6 in league play.
 
KEY STATS
 
- Carson-Newman shot 57 percent from the field; Wingate hit 44 percent of its shots
- The 'Dogs made six of 20 threes, while the Eagles made 13 of 25 
- C-N held a 34-27 rebounding advantage in the contest, also with a lead 21-14 in second chance points
- WU scored 14 points off of 11 Carson-Newman turnovers
 
KEY BULLDOGS
 
- Sasha Latino scored a career-high 16 points on 8-11 shooting, leading the way for the 'Dogs, while also adding five rebounds
- Jarren Cottingham poured in 15 points with two rebounds and four assists
- Destin Clark also scored 15 points, grabbing nine boards and dishing three assists
- Andreas Wilson put in 11 bench points with two three-pointers
 
FIRST HALF
 
- Carson-Newman went ahead early with a 14-7 run to start the game
- Clark added four points in quick succession out of the timeout to get WU back to a one possession game at 14-11
- Letino kept the 'Dogs in the game with his strong night after a paint jumper with eight minutes left in the half
- Wilson buried three free throws with less than five minutes left in the period to take Wingate's first lead at 29-25
- The Eagles finished on an 8-2 run to take a one-point lead to halftime
 
SECOND HALF
 
- Cottingham opened the second period with a three to go up 38-36
- C-N went on a 14-6 scoring run to control a lead before Josh Massey and Cottingham brought WU back to within two points at the media timeout
- Carson-Newman bounced back with a 12-0 run to pull away in the second half, fueled by three pointers by Luke Brenegan and Nick Brenegan
- Wilson hit a three with a minute left for Wingate's last points, finishing off an 87-68 game
