Azusa, Calif.----The Wingate University distance crew continued its California conquests Friday, moving up the NCAA Division II charts and setting new school standards at the Bryan Clay Invitational, hosted by fellow D2 member Azusa Pacific University inside the Cougar Athletic Stadium. Three Wingate men's track and field student-athletes posted three NCAA Division II provisional times Friday.
Scott Nutter
Nutter started Wingate's Friday at 7 a.m. Pacific time with a huge 10,000 meters race. Nutter finished second in the 73-person field, thanks to his new school-record time of 29:17.86. Arkansas State junior
Jacob Pyeatt won the race with his time of 29:11.66.
Nutter's time is the third-fastest time in the NCAA Division II and a personal-best effort. His Friday morning time is the fastest in the South Atlantic Conference this season. The second-year Bulldog was running his first outdoor race of the 2023 season.
Hamza Chahid
In only his second outdoor track and field meet as a Bulldog, Chahid shaved 22 seconds off Wingate's best-ever 5000 meters time with his 13:33.32 posting. The two-time NCAA Division II indoor national champion and WU freshman finished third in the 20-person invitational field to NCAA Division I runners from Northern Arizona and California Baptist.
Chahid's 13:33.32 mark is the second-fastest 5000 meters time in NCAA Division II this season. The current fastest-time honors belong to Colorado School of Mines junior
Dillon Powell with his 13:30.93 mark. Interestingly enough, Powell earned his stripes in California as well when he ran in the Stanford Invitational on March 31.
Lars Laros
Like his first-year classmate Hamza Chahid, Laros was also running his second outdoor track and field meet in the Navy Blue and Vegas Gold. His 5000 meters time of 14:04.88 is the No. 2 time in the SAC this season, second only to Chahid's 13:33.32. Laros is now No. 3 on Wingate's 5000 meters career top 10.
In his Bryan Clay Invitational 5000 meters open heat, Laros finished ninth out of 30 runners.
Laros was the top NCAA Division II finisher in his race. He defeated NCAA Division I runners from Alabama, Colorado, Colorado State and Indiana, among others.
Laros and Chahid partnered with two teammates (
Jakob Rettschlag and
Deon Sumpter) to win the Distance Medley Relay (DMR) national title at the 2023 NCAA indoor national championship meet. Wingate's DMR quartet was the first Bulldog men's relay team to qualify for the NCAA postseason.
Lauryn Tumey Ursery
Tumey Ursery returned to the track less than 24 hours after the grueling Mt. SAC Relays 10,000 meters to compete in the open 5000 meters. She ran a personal-best time of 17:09.76 at Azusa Pacific, clipping 17 seconds from her previous PR. Tumey Ursery narrowly missed the NCAA Division II provisional mark of 17:07.10.
She finished 14th out of 31 runners in her heat. Tumey Ursery's time of 17:09.76 is the fastest time in the SAC this season, seven seconds faster than teammate
Zoe Brickley's 17:16.66 mark in the Lee University Flames Invitational Easter weekend. A graduate student, Tumey Ursery was the only Bulldog to compete in two California races this week.
What They Are Saying
Wingate head cross country coach and assistant track and field coach
Pol Domenech
"We had a very successful trip to California. Every person who competed ran a provisional qualifying mark. We had a great energy all trip long and you could see this in the performances. It makes me proud that we can compete successfully and be competitive on the biggest stage in one of the best meets in the country. We look forward to continuing to strengthen our position in the national rankings and to preparing ourselves to compete against the best at the NCAA outdoor national championships in May."
