Weathers and Boufrizi finish with All-American honors on day two of NCAA DII Outdoor National Championships

NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships Day Two Results

Pueblo, Colo.---- The Wingate University track and field team returned to CSU Pueblo's ThunderBowl for Day two of the NCAA Division II outdoor track and field championship in Pueblo, Colorado. Field athletes, Valerie Daehler and Darius "Dash" Weathers represented the Bulldogs in the women's high jump and men's triple jump, respectively, while Soheil Boufrizi returned to the track after qualifying in Thursday night's men's 3000 meter steeplechase.

In her first national championship appearance, Daehler started the day clearing jumps of 1.60 and 1.65 but was unable clear at 1.68 meter. The junior high jumper finished the 2023 season as a SAC Champion, while setting a personal-best and meet record at the Lee University Last Chance Meet (1.71 meters). 

Weathers set the mark at 15.00 meters and held the lead early on, but was unable to improve in his final jumps to conclude his stellar Bulldog career. Weathers finished with second team All-American honors with a ninth-place finish, as Papay Glaywulu of Adams State claimed the national title with a jump of 16.15 meters. Graduate student Weathers set a season-best jump of 15.36 meters at the 2023 SAC Outdoor Championships.

Boufrizi used a time of 9:16.88 to qualify for Friday night's 3000 meters steeplechase final. In a loaded field, Boufirizi (9:48.77) would go on to finish 12th to earn second team All-American laurels. The 3000 meters steeplechase featured back-to-back national champion Reece Smith of Northwest Missouri State, who ran for a time of 9:07.03. Boufrizi set a personal-best and school-record of 8:49.89 this season at the APU Fronson Last Chance Meet.

The final day of the outdoor championships features Jakob Rettschlag and Hamza Chahid in the men's 1500 meters finals at 7:45 p.m. EDT. Chahid also joins Scott Nutter in the 5000 meters finals set for 10:30 p.m. EDT.
