Bulldogs suffer first league setback of the season at Catawba

Salisbury, N.C.----The Catawba College Indians used a 25-10 second half run Wednesday night to take down first-place Wingate University 91-80 in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action. The Indians improve to 9-4 overall and 6-3 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 14-4 overall and 9-1 in league play.

KEY STATS

- Catawba shot 43 percent from the field, going seven-for-21 from three-point range (33 percent)
- Wingate shot 43 percent from the field, connecting on five-of-19 shots from deep (26 percent)
- Each team had 39 rebounds; the Indians held an 18-11 edge in second-chance points
- The Bulldogs were 29-for-34 at the free throw line; the Indians went 20-for-24
- Catawba scored 17 points off 16 Bulldog turnovers

KEY BULLDOGS

- Kendall Taylor had 20 points and 12 rebounds, going seven-for-eight at the free throw line
- Donell Nixon added 19 points, four boards and four assists
- Vontrez Roberts had 17 points and six boards, going 13-for-14 at the free throw line
- Josh Massey contributed 11 points and three rebounds
- Jaden Lingo and Taylor Bell and five and four points, respectively

FIRST HALF

- A Peyton Gerald jumper four minutes in gave Catawba a 10-7 lead
- Layups from Bell and Lingo sparked a 6-0 run to put the 'Dogs on top 13-10
- The Indians scored the next 14, taking a 24-13 advantage on an O'Mazeon jumper at the midway point
- Massey's three a minute later pulled the 'Dogs back within six
- Nixon buried a triple with eight minutes remaining to make it 26-21
- A Justin Banks dunk pushed the Catawba advantage back to 10 at 31-21
- A Roberts layup at the 4:42 mark cut it back to six
- Nixon's layup with two minutes left pulled the 'Dogs within five at 37-32
- Justin Mitchell's jumper in the final minute gave Catawba a 41-33 lead

SECOND HALF

- Wingate scored 14 of the first 17 points in the second half to take a three-point lead
- Taylor had seven points in the spurt, while Roberts capped it with two free throws at the 16:29 mark
- Zion McDuffie's jumper at the 13:22 mark tied it at 51
- Two Taylor free throws gave the 'Dogs a three-point advantage at 54-51
- Taylor buried a three at the 10:34 mark gave Wingate a 61-57 lead
- Catawba scored the next eight, taking a 65-61 lead on a Kris Robinson triple
- McDuffie extended the Catawba advantage to eight with a layup at the 6:53 mark
- Massey's bucket made it 73-67, but a Robinson triple pushed the lead back to nine
- Two free throws from Gerald made it 82-71 with 3:49 to go
- Nixon's triple with 1:17 remaining cut the lead to seven
- Free throws from Tinsley with 36 seconds left put the lead back in double figures
