Wingate drops tough 70-69 contest at Young Harris in season opener

Young Harris, Ga.----The Wingate University Bulldogs erased a 13-point second-half deficit and took a lead late in the contest, but Young Harris was able to prevail 70-69 in NCAA Division II men's basketball action Saturday afternoon. The Mountain Lions move to 2-2 on the season, while the 'Dogs fall to 0-1 overall.

- Young Harris shot 39 percent from the field, going four-for-18 from three-point range (22 percent)
- Wingate shot 40 percent from the field, connecting on seven-of-29 from deep (24 percent)

FIRST HALF

- Buckets from Taylor and Grant sparked a 5-0 run that made it 20-15
- A jumper and two free throws from Richards cut the lead to two with 5:42 to go
- Deptula buried a three with four minutes left to push the YHC lead back to eight
- Two Lingo free throws and another Grant jumper made it 33-29 at the 2:17 mark
- Young Harris scored the next six, taking a 39-29 lead on a Carl Cleveland bucket
- Two free throws from Grant in the final seconds made the halftime deficit 39-31 for the 'Dogs

SECOND HALF

- Cleveland's jumper four minutes into the half gave the Mountain Lions a 46-33 advantage
- Wingate scored the next 11 points, getting triples from Lingo and Erbeck to make it a two-point game
- Taylor's layup with nine minutes to go cut the lead to one at 47-46
- Morgan Rashed's bucket a minute later pushed the lead back to six
- A Miller jumper and Erbeck three cut the lead to one with 6:19 to go
- Two Lingo free throws gave the 'Dogs a 55-54 advantage
- Taylor's jumper with five minutes to go gave Wingate a three-point lead
- A Deptula four-point play with 3:42 remaining put YHC back on top by one
- A Lingo triple and Taylor jumper gave the 'Dogs a 64-61 lead at the 2:45 mark
- Cleveland responded with a three to tie it, but two Taylor free throws put WU back on top
- Rashed knocked down two free throws with 43 seconds left to give YHC a 68-67 lead
- Lingo answered with two free throws with 21 seconds remaining to give Wingate a 69-68 advantage
- A Karl Chavis jumper with seven seconds remaining put the Mountain Lions back on top 70-69
- Wingate had a chance in the final seconds, but Taylor could not get a jumper to go
