Wingate men’s triathlon club earns victory in Davidson Collegiate Cup

RESULTS | 2024 Lake Davidson Sprint Triathlon

Wingate, NC. ---- The Wingate University men's triathlon club placed first in the Davidson Collegiate Cup presented by Trane Technologies Sunday. The Bulldogs scored 15 points, followed by Queens with 25 points and Lenoir-Rhyne with 81 points. The Wingate team finished the race with seven of the top 10 run times.

Senior Martin Garcia secured the individual victory, posting a total time of 53:42. "It was a tough race, but I'm happy I got the win," Garcia says. "Fitness is looking good and I am looking forward to racing regionals. We have a very good team to fight."

Freshman Isaac Lamprecht finished third with a time of 53:50. "I had what was probably the best swim in a race ever," Lamprecht says. "The bike just felt super smooth and fast and I was just doing my best to stay towards the front throughout the whole race." Close behind Lamprecht was WU graduate student Xoel Abad, who secured fourth with a time of 54:00.

The men raced a non-draft sprint distance triathlon. The race kicked off with an in-water start to a 750 meter open water swim in Lake Davidson. Senior Humberto Jenner came first out of the water for the fastest swim of the day, leading the Bulldogs into a 20-kilometer bike course. The race closed with a five-kilometer run on a windy path.

Wingate head coach Nick Radkewich was impressed with the team's finish in the first sprint distance race of the season. "It was a tough course today…our strong swims set the tone for a very fast race," Radkewich says. "Martin had a great race to start his senior season, getting the individual win. Having freshman Isaac Lamprecht finish third on the podium in his Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Triathlon Conference (MACTC) debut means the future looks good for the program."

The team excelled on the run, with junior Jack Spence claiming the fastest run time of 16:13. After top swims from the Bulldogs followed by power-closing runs, 10 of the team members finished the race under 60 minutes.
