Indianapolis, Ind.----Wingate University senior
Titouan Le Grix ran a blistering 27.09 final 200 meters to win the men's mile run national title in the
NCAA Division II indoor national championship meet Saturday. For the first time in NCAA history, the indoor championships were held inside the Fall Creek Pavilion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indy.
Le Grix rallied to post a gold-medal time of 3:59.15 to win his second individual track national championship. He won the men's 3000 meter steeplechase at the '24 NCAA outdoor meet. CSU-Pueblo junior
Reece Sharman-Newell was right on Le Grix's heels, finishing second with his time of 3:59.56.
Le Grix lowered his previous WU school standard by 0.31 seconds. He ran a 3:59.46 at Virginia Tech's Doc Hale Invitational in February. Le Grix's Saturday mark of 3:59.15 is a new NCAA Division II meet record and a Fall Creek Pavilion facility record.
On the team charts, Wingate finished a program-best seventh place in the NCAA Division II indoor national championship meet. Wingate had 28 points, only one point behind sixth-place West Texas A&M and only two points behind fifth-place Northwest Missouri State. Pittsburg State (Kansas) won the men's meet with 76 points. Grand Valley State was a distant second with 61.5 points.
What They Are Saying
Wingate assistant track and field coach
Pol Domenech
"In our program, outcomes do not hold as much weight as the process towards them. Before the championships, the coaching staff and Titouan knew he had what was required to be a national champion. The race scenario played out exactly perfect for him, as the fast pace made it easy to maneuver around the pack."
"With 400 meters to go, we felt sure he had the victory. With 200 meters to go, he went for it with his characteristic closing speed and no one could respond. Only the people close to him know about all the ups and downs he has gone through during his career…for him to have this reward now is incredible. Now we turn our full focus to the outdoor season!"
