Hickory, N.C.----The Wingate University women's outdoor track and field team scored 249 points to win its third consecutive South Atlantic Conference championship Thursday
inside the Irwin Belk Track at the Moretz Sports Athletic Campus. Sophomore
Ally Holmberg was named the Field Athlete of the Meet, while newcomer
Firdaouss Hriche was named the SAC Freshman of the Year.

Holmberg had a productive event, setting new WU school standards in the javelin throw (first place, 40.46 meters) and the heptathlon (third place, 4838 points). In addition to her podium finishes in the javelin throw and the heptathlon, Holmberg finished fourth in the high jump (1.60 meters) and fourth in the long jump (5.67 meters).

Hriche started her first SAC meet by winning the 3000-meter steeplechase Wednesday with her triumphant time of 10:54.39. On Thursday, Hriche took fourth place in the 1500 meters with her time of 4:38.26.

Wingate won seven events Thursday. The Bulldogs took four gold medals in field events and three gold medals in track events. Junior
Judith Vaquero defended her 2024 crown in the discus throw, taking first place with her season-best mark of 42.42 meters. Sophomore
Assiya ElHafyan won the high jump for the second straight year with her mark of 1.68 meters.

Amber Lawless won the shot put, thanks to her personal-best mark of 14.07 meters. Lawless won the SAC Elite 23 Award at the league's indoor track and field championships in March. Freshman
Hayat Abdeselam took the top spot in the triple jump with her personal-best mark of 12.40 meters.

Mia Cabrera won the 800 meters with her time of 2:11.43. Classmate
Hoyane Esper claimed the gold medal in the 400 meter hurdles with her personal-best time of 1:00.76. Sophomore
Evie Brooks won the 1500 meters with her time of 4:31.48. Wingate had five of the top six finishers in the 1500 meters Thursday.
