Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.----The 14th-ranked Wingate University men's golf team took No. 2-ranked West Florida to the wire on Thursday evening before falling 3.5-1.5 in the NCAA Division II National Championships. In a season Hollywood couldn't script, the Bulldogs end their 2025 campaign in the national semifinals.

What They Are Saying
Wingate director of athletics Joe Reich

"We could not be prouder of our guys, head coach JD Lamm and assistant coach Brian Murtagh! What a great showing at the highest level of D2. This has truly been a special group."

Wingate takes down Missouri S&T in Thursday morning quarterfinals

Playing on the Champions Course at PGA National, the Bulldogs took down Missouri S&T in convincing fashion, 4-1, in the morning quarterfinals, becoming the first team in Wingate history to win in match play. This was the second straight season Wingate had advanced to the match play event, which includes the top eight teams after 54 holes of stroke play.

Bulldogs and Argonauts for a chance to go to Friday's finals

The aforementioned historic victory set up a match against one of the favorites, West Florida. A fixture in the national championships for the past 30 years, the Argonauts were in command by a 4-1 count after nine holes, leading by a total of 10 shots; however, the gritty Bulldogs battled back.

National Freshman of the Year Brandon Skidmore was Wingate's tour de force against UWF in the opening pairing. He led for all but one hole and shot 70 to beat Eddie Lee (74) by a 4-up count. In Match No. 2, Argonaut Cooper Tedrick never trailed, firing a six-under-par 66 to defeat Bulldog junior Lewis Beeden (71) by a 5-up tally. West Florida's Per Ekland carded a 69 to beat Wingate junior Fynn Loewe (79) by 10 in the fourth match out.

Thus, UWF was up 2-1 when those matches ended; the Argos needed only one more point. Wingate freshman Cole Rouse and West Florida's Fabian Wennerlof split their point in Match No. 3, making the score 2.5-1.5 in favor of the Argonauts.

Hyland battles for the win

This meant Bulldog graduate student Jordan Hyland would have to win his match to give Wingate a tie and send the contest to a tiebreaker. Hyland proved resilient. After a rough start, when he shot 40 on the front nine and trailed by four shots, he birdied No. 10 while West Florida's T.J. Thompson made double bogey, pulling the Bulldog Academic All-America standout within two shots.

Hyland parred No. 12 and Thompson doubled again, so the match was all square. Hyland took the lead with a par at No. 14, but Thompson birdied the par-3 15th to pull even. The match stayed this way until the 18th hole, when Hyland, knowing he had to make birdie to give the Bulldogs a chance, lost the hole with a bogey 5. Thompson prevailed 1-up at 74 to 75.

UWF advances to play Colorado Christian-North Georgia winner

West Florida will likely play top-ranked Colorado Christian for the national championship on Friday. Colorado Christian, unbeaten this season, was up 4-1 on North Georgia when their match was suspended by darkness.
