Awards handed out at 13th annual WUSPYS

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University athletic department hosted the 13th annual WUSPYS Wednesday night, celebrating another impressive year of Bulldog athletics. Fifteen total WUSPYS were handed out, along with each team handing out their two awards. The women's golf team led the way with four WUSPYS on Wednesday night, including Team of the Year honors along with Athlete and Freshman of the Year. Track and Field and Men's Lacrosse picked up a pair of trophies apiece. Winners are below, along with highlight videos from each category. MALE BREAKTHROUGH ATHLETE (WATCH FULL HIGHLIGHT VIDEO)

WINNER | Quad Williams (Lacrosse)

- Registered 40 saves in 230 minutes of action through his first two seasons at Wingate
- Has piled up 177 saves this year, starting all 19 games for the #6 Bulldogs
- Leads the SAC in save percentage, helping WU rank second in the conference in goals-against average

FEMALE BREAKTHROUGH ATHLETE (WATCH FULL HIGHLIGHT VIDEO)

WINNER | Maddie Hoffman (Volleyball)

- After collecting 200 digs through her first 2 seasons, Hoffman piled up 607 digs in 2024
- The All-SAC and All-Region libero earned AVCA honorable mention All-Americans
- Led a defense that ranked 7th nationally in opponents hitting percentage, winning SAC & Region titles

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR (Non-Freshman) (WATCH FULL HIGHLIGHT VIDEO)

WINNER | Kathryn McCabe (Women's Lacrosse)
- SAC Defensive Player of the Year and 1st Team All-SAC honoree
- Leads the SAC in draw controls and caused turnovers, ranking 2nd in ground balls
- Ranks in the top 20 in the nation in all 3 categories, helping WU lead the nation in caused turnovers

PLAY OF THE YEAR (WATCH FULL HIGHLIGHT VIDEO)

WINNER | Titouan Le Grix wins national title at Indoor Mile
- The senior picked up the second individual national title of his career at the D2 Indoors
- Le Grix ran a 27.09 in the final 200 meters, finishing the mile in 3:59.15 to win the title
- His NCAA D2 meet record helped Wingate finish 7th at the Indoor national meet

UPSET OF THE YEAR (WATCH FULL HIGHLIGHT VIDEO)

WINNER | Men's Lacrosse at #2 Limestone (SAC Semifinals)
- The #10 Bulldogs punched their ticket to the SAC title game with a 17-16 OT win at #2 Limestone
- The Saints jumped out to a 7-1 lead, but Wingate scored 7 straight, taking a 9-8 halftime lead
- LU scored late to force OT, but Sam Goss scored with just over a minute left to give WU the win

GAME OF THE YEAR (WATCH FULL HIGHLIGHT VIDEO)

WINNER | Football SAC title game vs. Carson-Newman
- The Bulldogs avenged their lone SAC loss of the year in style, downing C-N 28-13 in the title game
- WU held the vaunted C-N offense to 84 total yards and 7 first downs, forcing 3 turnovers
- Caleb Bonesteel made all 5 field goals including 2 over 40 yards to earn MVP honors

BEST COMEBACK WIN (WATCH FULL HIGHLIGHT VIDEO)

WINNER | Women's Golf in SAC Championship
- The #3 Bulldogs entered the final round of the SAC Championship trailing #1 Anderson by 7 shots
- Wingate fired a 1-under par 287 in the final round, 10 shots better than the Trojans to win by 3
- Amely Bochaton led the charge, pouring in 7 birdies to shoot 66 and win the individual title going away
- Olivia Meinecke & Jess Brown each sot even par 72; Noelia Adkins finished 5th overall

- Set SAC records in the 500, 1,000 & 1650; honorable mention All-American in the 1,000 Free

Their spirit for Wingate is seen on and off the field. Nominees for this award show outstanding passion for Wingate athletics, are visible all over campus at sporting events and represent the Bulldog blue & gold with heart and pride.)

- 1st Team Academic All-America honoree in 2023 & 2024 graduated with a 4.0 in Exercise Science
- Wingate's all-time leader with 60 homers, also WU all-time leader in RBI, total bases & runs scored
- The SAAC President is also involved in FCA, Samaritan's Purse, United Way & Special Olympics
- NCAA D2 active career leader in RBI & total bases, ranking second in homers
