Butrico and Tillett earn SAC Player of the Week honors

Rock Hill, S.C.----Wingate University senior attack Vinny Butrico has been named the WePlayed Sports South Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, league officials announced Monday afternoon. Senior long-stick midfielder Graham Tillett is the Defensive Player of the Week.

The duo led the sixth-ranked Bulldogs to a pair of SAC road wins, as Wingate stayed perfect in league play. The 'Dogs rallied for a thrilling 19-18 win at #2 Anderson to start the week, while cruising to a 24-5 victory at Mars Hill Saturday.

Butrico had a monster week, pouring in 16 goals while adding an assist. His week was highlighted by his record-setting 11-goal performance at Anderson Wednesday as the Bulldogs battled back to erase a six-goal deficit. In addition to the 11 goals, Butrico assisted on the game-winning goal with 2:29 remaining. It is the most goals scored by a player in D2 this year and the most in Wingate MLAX history, while the 12 points tie a program record. He followed up by scoring five goals in the win at Mars Hill on Saturday.

Tillett helped anchor the WU defense by registering five caused turnovers and piling up nine ground balls on the week. Tillett had two CTs and three ground balls in the Anderson victory. He registered three more CTs Saturday, while collecting five ground balls.

Butrico leads the nation in goals per game this season, pouring in a league-best 34 goals. He ranks third nationally in points per game. Tillett leads the Bulldogs and ranks eighth in the conference with 12 caused turnovers this year, adding 18 ground balls.

Wingate is back in action Wednesday, traveling to #11 Lenoir-Rhyne for a 7 p.m. non-conference contest. The 'Dogs host Emory & Henry Saturday at 3 p.m.
