Wingate sprints to 93-81 victory over Carson-Newman Wednesday

Jefferson City, Tenn.----The Wingate University men’s basketball team never trailed Wednesday night, leading from wire-to-wire in a 93-81 South Atlantic Conference victory over Carson-Newman College in Holt Fieldhouse. Five Bulldogs hit double figures in the road win.

With the victory, Wingate improves to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in the SAC. The Bulldogs double their 2008-09 road victory total (two), picking up their fourth away-from-home triumph this season. Carson-Newman falls to 6-8 overall and 1-3 in the SAC.

Wingate freshman center Odell Turner (Charlotte, N.C.) had 18 points for the visiting Bulldogs. Senior Larry Staley (Charlotte, N.C.) hit seven-of-eight shots from the floor en route to a 16-point performance. Staley filled out his stat sheet with four rebounds and a team-high four assists.

Freshman guard Paidrick Matilus (Boynton Beach, Fla.) added 13 points on five-of-seven shooting, while classmate Quan Alexander (Charlotte, N.C.) had 11 poitns and six rebounds. Freshman guard Ethan Kincaid (Morganton, N.C.) had 10 points and five rebounds off the bench, while senior guard/forward David Johnson (Durham, N.C.) flirted with a double-double. Johnson had nine points and a team-best seven rebounds.

For Carson-Newman, sophomore forward Quinche Dowdell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) had 17 points to lead six players in double figures. The Appalachian State University transfer hit seven-of-nine shots from the floor. He contributed four rebounds, four assists and a team-high three steals Wednesday.

Eagle sophomore guard Cameron Sharp (Knoxville, Tenn.) had 15 points, while forwards Tray Okoth (Richmond, Va.) and Erwin Staten (Huntsville, Ala.) split 24 points evenly. Senior forward Darron Maxtion (Huntsville, Ala.) and senior guard Jordan Dixon (Clinton, Tenn.) contributed 10 points each.
