Wingate, N.C.----Mercyhurst (Pa.) College junior midfielder Kevin Coholan (Rochester, N.Y.) collected a game-high five goals and two assists as the number four Lakers recorded a 19-5 victory over Wingate University Saturday afternoon in men’s lacrosse action at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field.

The Lakers are 2-0 overall on their North Carolina road trip and head to Dowling (N.Y.) College next Saturday for their first East Coast Conference outing of the season. The Bulldogs fall to 0-3 overall and return to Deep South Conference action Monday night with a 7 p.m. game at Rollins (Fla.) College.

Mercyhurst freshman attack Brian Scheetz (Canandaigua, N.Y.) added four goals and two assists to follow Coholan in the Lakers’ offensive effort. Scheetz leads the Lakers with seven goals and five assists this season. Sophomore attack Kyle Kallay (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada), senior attack Michael Sciulli (Pittsburgh, Pa.), and junior midfielder Cameron McLean (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada) added two scores each.

Sophomore attack David Lee (Greensboro, N.C.) led the Wingate offense with two goals. Freshman attack Colin O'Donoghue (Cranberry Township, Pa.) had one goal and one assist, while sophomore attack Bryan Bayliss (Lorton, Va.) and freshman midfielder Derek Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) tallied one goal each for the Bulldogs.

With only nine ticks off the clock, the Bulldogs got on the board first with an unassisted goal from Lee. Less than a minute later, Coholan scored the first of two solo goals that would begin a 3-0 run for the Lakers.

Senior midfielder Kyle Plante (Watertown, N.Y.) netted Mercyhurst’s third goal of the contest on an assist from junior midfielder Andy Winslow (Webster, N.Y.), but Wingate’s O’Donoghue recorded the first goal of his collegiate career at the 7:36 mark to leave the Bulldogs trailing by one. A third unassisted goal from Coholan extended the Laker lead to 4-2 at the end of the first period.

Mercyhurst tallied six unanswered goals in the second frame for a 10-2 lead at halftime. McLean and Scheetz led the Laker run with two goals each.

The Lakers put three more scores on the board in the third period, but the Bulldogs answered with three goals of their own when Watts netted his first collegiate goal at the 5:10 mark. Six different players scored in the final frame to lead Mercyhurst in a 6-0 run.

Wingate sophomore Danny Dlugozima (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) took the loss and recorded 10 saves. Mercyhurst junior Zach Nash (Rochester, N.Y.) earned the victory in 51-plus minutes of play; he collected four saves.

The Lakers outshot the Bulldogs 51-22 and picked up 42 ground balls to Wingate’s 28. Mercyhurst won 21 of 27 face-off attempts and capitalized on four of seven extra-man opportunities. Wingate was zero-for-eight.
