Brevard, N.C.----The Wingate University men’s tennis team did not lose a set in singles as the Bulldogs picked an 8-1 South Atlantic Conference victory over Brevard College Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs are 10-3 overall and 5-1 in the SAC. The BC Tornados are 4-6 overall and 1-1 in the SAC.

Wingate sophomore number one Bruno Pudence (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was one of four Bulldogs to pick two victories each Friday. In singles, Pudence outlasted Brevard junior Scott McCormick (Adelaide, Australia) 7-6 (4), 6-3. Earlier in the match, Pudence teamed with classmate Flavio Rathsam (Sao Paulo, Brazil) to defeat McCormick and freshman Dorian Feron (Hennuyeres, Belgium) 8-5 at the number one doubles flight.

Rathsam kept his winning streak alive Friday, as he won his 23rd consecutive singles match with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Feron in the number five singles contest. For his two-year Wingate career, Rathsam is 25-1 overall in singles. He is 12-0 during the 2010 season.

The Bulldogs lost only five games at number two and number three singles. At the number two flight, Wingate sophomore Matthew Lichtenstein (Darnestown, Md.) defeated BC sophomore Cole Altizer (Charlotte, N.C.) 6-1, 6-1. Classmate Andrew Owen (Kitchener, Ontario) stopped BC freshman Jonathan Kuhn (Guatemala) 6-1, 6-2 in the number three singles match. Lichtenstein and Owen earned an 8-5 number three doubles victory over Kuhn and senior Andrew Thompson (San Antonio, Texas).

Wingate will continue its journey through the N.C. mountains Saturday, visiting SAC rival Mars Hill College for an 11 a.m. contest. The Bulldogs defeated the Lions 7-2 last season at Wingate, clinching their first SAC regular season championship in the process.
