Bulldogs drop non-conference contest at Erskine 11-5

Due West, S.C.----Erskine College jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the first inning and went on to an 11-5 victory over Wingate University in NCAA Division II baseball action Wednesday afternoon.

Chas Anthony would get the scoring started with a one-out solo homer to right field and the Fleet would add three more in the first for the 4-0 lead.

The Bulldogs would cut the lead in half in third on a two-run blast from sophomore infielder Logan Isaacs (Raleigh, N.C.), but Erskine would take advantage of two Wingate errors in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 7-2 game.

Trailing 8-2 in the fifth inning, sophomore outfielder Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) would double, and then later score on an Erskine error to cut the lead to five. Sophomore first baseman Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) would add an RBI single to cut the Erskine lead to 8-4.

That would be as close as the Bulldogs would get, as Anthony blasted his second homer of the game to left field in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Greg Huff who had led off the inning with a single to make it a 10-4 game.

Anthony led the Fleet at the plate going two-for-five with two home runs and three RBI, while Drew Willingham went three-for-five with a double and three RBI. William Buzhardt (4-1) picked up the win, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits in six innings of work, while Pearson picked up his fifth save allowing two hits in 2.2 innings of work and striking out three.

Isaacs led the Bulldogs offense, going two-for-five with a home run and two RBI. Allison, Yeung, and sophomore outfielder Dodson McPherson (Graham, N.C.) also drove in runs for the Bulldogs. Sophomore right-hander Jim Ealy (Angier, N.C.) took the loss, allowing seven runs (two earned) on seven hits in three innings pitched. He falls to 0-1 on the year.

With the win, Erskine improves to 13-5 while Wingate falls to 7-5 on the season. The Bulldogs return to action this weekend, hosting a three game series against Tusculum. Game one is Friday night at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs and Pioneers meet for a doubleheader Saturday, with game one starting at 1 p.m. The Wingate Sports Network will provide a live video broadcast for the entire Wingate-Tusculum series.
