St. Andrews tops Wingate 11-4 Wednesday

Wingate, N.C.----St. Andrews Presbyterian College freshman attack Bobby Murray (Miami, Fla.) had four goals as the visiting Knights defeated Wingate University 11-4 in NCAA Division II lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field on the Wingate campus.

St. Andrews improves to 3-8 overall, while Wingate is 4-8 overall. The Bulldogs visit Deep South Conference foe and NCAA Division II number 10 Mars Hill College Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest. The SAPC Knights entertain number four Limestone College Saturday for a 2 p.m. Conference Carolinas encounter.

Freshman attack Riley Fink (University Park, Md.) supported Murray with one goal and a game-high three assists. Three Knights had two goals each. Junior midfielder Michael Thomas (Stevensville, Md.) had two goals and one assist for the visitors. St. Andrews outshot Wingate 31-24. The Knights won 13 of the 18 face-offs Wednesday.

For Wingate, sophomore midfield Bryan Bayliss (Lorton, Va.) had one goal and one assist. Three Bulldog teammates had one goal each.

The Bulldogs led 2-1 after the first quarter. Wingate junior attack Billy Mutton (Mechanicsville, Va.) opening the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 14:01 mark. Thomas answered for the Knights to tie the score four minutes later. Wingate sophomore attack David Lee (Greensboro, N.C.) put the hosts up 2-1, thanks to an unassisted goal at the 7:34 plateau.

St. Andrews responded with a 6-0 run (spanning the second and third quarters) to take the lead for good. Murray scored three of his four goals during this stretch, posting three in a row in the second quarter. Murray’s triple play turned a 2-2 tie into a 5-2 Knights’ lead with 6:47 left before intermission. The visitors carried this lead into the halftime locker room.

Wingate would get no closer the rest of the way. St. Andrews senior midfield Kyle Carnaggio (Pasadena, Md.) scored the first two goals of the third quarter to give the Knights a 7-2 lead at the 11:24 mark. Bulldog junior midfield Chris Johns (Wilmington, N.C.) scored his first goal of the season at 4:07 to pull the hosts within four. Murray posted his final tally of the day with 0.5 seconds left in the third frame to make the score 8-3.

Bulldog sophomore goalkeeper Danny Dlugozima (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) took the loss. In 52-plus minutes, he recorded nine saves and allowed 10 goals. St. Andrews junior goalie Patrick Wade (West Windsor, N.J.) collected his first victory of the season for the visitors. In 60 minutes, he gave up four goals. Wade earned four saves.
