Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University men’s tennis team defeated Newberry College 6-3 in South Atlantic Conference tennis action Thursday afternoon. The Bulldogs win their eighth straight match to improve to 12-3 overall and 7-1 in the SAC. Newberry falls to 1-10 overall and 0-5 in the SAC.

Three Bulldogs went 2-0 on Thursday. Sophomore Matthew Lichtenstein (Darnestown, Md.) won 6-1, 6-2 in number two singles and teamed with sophomore Andrew Owen (Kitchener, Ontario) for an 8-0 win in number three doubles. The Lichtenstein/Owen duo is now 7-0 on the season. Owen added a 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 victory in number three singles to complete his undefeated afternoon.

Junior Fernando Montemurro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) notched a 6-0, 6-0 win in number six singles, while teaming with sophomore Greg Machado (Sao Paulo, Brazil) for an 8-5 victory in number two doubles. Montemurro has now won eight straight singles matches.

Sophomore Flavio Rathsam (Sao Paulo, Brazil) added a 6-0, 6-0 win in number five singles to improve to 14-0 on the season, winning his 25th consecutive match for the Bulldogs.

Newberry senior Maxim Sukharev (Vilnius, Lithuania) went 2-0 for the scarlet-and-gray. He won 6-2, 6-1 in number one singles and picked up an 8-6 victory in number one doubles.

Wingate returns to action Wednesday, April 7, hosting Coker College at 2:30 p.m. Newberry travels to Mars Hill College next Thursday for a 3 p.m. start.
