Bulldogs outslug Bearcats 11-7 Tuesday night

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University baseball team blasted three home runs and compiled 13 total hits in an 11-7 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional victory over visiting Lander University Tuesday night at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field.

With the victory, the South Atlantic Conference regular season champion Bulldogs improve to 29-17 overall. The LU Bearcats fall to 23-20 overall. Wingate begins the Food Lion SAC tournament Thursday, facing Lincoln Memorial University at 12 noon in Forest City, N.C. 

Six Wingate players had two hits each. Redshirt freshman first baseman Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) was two-for-three with a homer and three RBI. Junior designated hitter Tres Ramirez (Ocala, Fla.) was two-for-five with a homer and three RBI. Ramirez hit a three-run homer in the first inning, while Yeung contributed a three-run tank in the sixth. Sophomore third baseman Jacob Karr (Richmond, Va.) added a two-run homer for the hosts.

The Bearcats also posted 13 hits, but the Peach Belt Conference members left 12 runners on base Tuesday night. Lander junior third baseman Robert Skinner (Hartsville, S.C.) was four-for-six with three RBI. Bearcat senior center fielder Bud Lanier (Rocky Point, N.C.) was three-for-four with an RBI and two runs scored.

Ramirez helped push the Bulldogs to a 5-0 lead with his three-run homer in the first inning. The Bearcats battled back, tying the game at 6-6 with two runs in the top of the fifth frame. Skinner plated both runs with a two-RBI single.

Wingate took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Yeung started the stanza with a walk. One out later, Karr hit a towering shot to right field to give the home-standing Bulldogs an 8-6 advantage. After the Bearcats got one back in the top of the sixth inning, Yeung finished the scoring in the home-half of the sixth with his three-run blast.

Bulldog sophomore right-hander Blake Parsley (Charlotte, N.C.) earned the victory in relief. The Ardrey Kell High School product gave up three earned runs on four hits. He struck out two and walked two. Lander freshman Brantley Blalock (Kings Mountain, N.C.) was tagged with the loss; he gave up five runs on six hits. Blalock struck out four and walked three.
