Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs swept a doubleheader against the Raiders of Shippensburg University Saturday afternoon in NCAA Division II baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The ‘Dogs won the first game 14-2, while rallying for a 7-5 victory in the second game to improve to 3-0 on the season. Shippensburg falls to 0-2 on the year.
Game One: Wingate 14, Shippensburg 2
Junior outfielder
Dodson McPherson (Graham, N.C.) blasted a grand slam to ignite the Wingate offense, which scored in every inning except the first. Redshirt sophomore infielder
James Tedder (Clemmons, N.C.) was three-for-three with four runs scored and an RBI, while senior catcher
Taylor Honeycutt (Indian Trail, N.C.) was two-for-three with a double, three RBI and a run scored.
The Bulldogs got the scoring started in the second, scoring the first run on an RBI single from Honeycutt. The second run scored on a wild pitch, while McPherson provided the rest of the offense in the inning with a grand slam over the right field fence to make it 6-0.
The Raiders scored a pair of runs in the second to cut into the lead. Junior infielder
Eric Herman (Grantville, Pa.) scored the first run on an error, while a sacrifice fly from junior infielder
Ben Miller (New Providence, Pa.) made it 6-2.
An RBI double from redshirt sophomore infielder
Josh Karr (Richmond, Va.) made it 7-2 in the third. Redshirt sophomore first baseman
Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) pushed the lead back to six with an RBI double in the fourth.
Honeycutt ripped a two-run double to left in the fifth to make it 10-2. The ‘Dogs added four more runs in the sixth for the final margin. Senior outfielder Brandon Santiago (Monroe, N.C.) lined an RBI triple to center to start the scoring. He scored on an RBI double from Tedder. A bases-loaded walk, followed by a sacrifice fly from junior infielder Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, Ga.) capped the scoring in the first game.
Senior left-hander
Chris Nelson (Greenville, N.C.) got the win, allowing two unearned runs in five innings of work. He gave up only one hit, while striking out two to improve to 1-0 on the year. Junior left-hander
Nick Umberger (Downingtown, Pa.) took the loss, allowing seven earned runs on five hits in three innings of work, striking out four.
Game Two: Wingate 7, Shippensburg 5
Yeung was three-for-four with three RBI, including the go-ahead two-run triple to lead the Wingate offense in the second game. Senior outfielder
Cale Rogers (Snow Camp, N.C.) had three hits, while scoring two runs and driving in one. McPherson added a two-for-three game with an RBI.
Senior infielder
Kris Kullman (Hummelstown, Pa.) had a homer and two RBI to lead the Shippensburg offense. Senior outfielder
AJ Czap (Philipsburg, Pa.) added a double, RBI and run scored for the Raiders.
Shippensburg jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, highlighted by Kullman’s two-run homer to right. The Bulldogs answered with a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from Yeung.
The Raiders added a pair of runs to their lead in the second inning. Czap drove home the first run on an RBI fielder’s choice. The second run came around to score on an error to give Shippensburg a 5-1 lead.
That would be all of the scoring until the bottom of the sixth, when the Bulldogs exploded for six runs. Karr got it started got it started with an RBI double down the right field line. Rogers added an RBI single to make it 5-3. Vazquez made it a one-run game by drawing a bases-loaded walk, while a sacrifice fly from McPherson tied the game at five. Yeung followed with the big hit, lining a two-run double to the left center field gap to give Wingate its first lead of the game.
Sophomore right-hander
Justin Somers (Wilmington, N.C.) came in to secure the victory in the seventh, striking out the side in order to notch his second save of the season. Freshman left hander
Bryce Danielson (Horse Shoe, N.C.) got the win, allowing only one hit in 1 1/3 innings of work, striking out one to move to 1-0 on the year. Sophomore right-hander
Josh Scott (York, Pa.) took the loss, allowing three runs on two hits in one-third of an inning, falling to 0-1 on the season.
The teams return to action Sunday, playing the third and final game of the series at 1 p.m. at Ron Christopher Stadium.
