Wingate tennis teams sweep huge SAC twin bill at Lincoln Memorial

Harrogate, Tenn.----The Wingate University men’s and women’s tennis teams earned two huge victories over Lincoln Memorial University Saturday afternoon. The number 38 Bulldog men (8-3 overall) survived 5-4, while the number 39 Wingate women (11-1 overall) earned a 6-3 victory.

The Bulldog women took a 2-1 lead after singles and swept the three through six singles matches to take the road victory. Freshmen doubles partners Morgan Winston (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Olivia Poole (Boca Raton, Fla.) started the day with a convincing 8-1 triumph in the number three doubles flight.

Winston defeated LMU freshman Alexandra Granger 6-2, 6-1 in the number three singles contest. Poole matched her classmate with 6-2, 6-1 triumph over freshman Shena Joseph at the number four doubles flight. Sophomore Kelli Ferguson (Charlotte, N.C.) and junior Helen Goreski (Oakville, Ontario) also won crucial singles matches for the visiting Bulldogs.

In the men’s match, Wingate rallied from a 2-1 doubles deficit to capture the SAC victory. Junior Greg Machado (Sao Paulo, Brazil) clinched the win for the visiting Bulldogs. In the number six singles flight, Machado topped LMU freshman Stefan Hall 6-2, 6-2. Both of Machado’s career conference singles wins have been against the LMU Railsplitters.

Wingate senior Braeden Patchell (Oakville, Ontario) made sure his final Tennessee trip ended on a good note, as the All-SAC performer picked up two crucial victories. In singles, he defeated freshman Michael Koenen 7-5, 6-3. Earlier in the day, Patchell paired with junior Matthew Lichtenstein (Darnestown, Md.) to earn an 8-5 victory in the number two doubles match.

Both Wingate teams return to action Wednesday, visiting Catawba College for a 2 p.m. SAC doubleheader. In the fall, the Wingate men defeated Catawba 6-3 in a non-conference match, while the Bulldog women took an 8-1 victory over the Indians.
