Emily Chavis (Berkeley Lake, Ga.) had four hits, including a pair of homers, while driving in five to lead the Bulldogs to a doubleheader sweep over the Trojans of Mount Olive College in NCAA Division II softball action Wednesday afternoon. Wingate won the first game 7-3, then won game two 5-2 to improve to 17-6 overall. The Trojans fall to 12-17 on the season.
Game #1: Wingate 7, Mount Olive 3
Chavis went three-for-four with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate attack. Senior infielder Gina Ager (Columbia, Md.) was two-for-three with a double, RBI and run scored, while freshman designated player Jessica Walsh (Columbia, S.C.) had a pair of hits and a run scored.
Senior infielder Kelly Minshew (Stantonsburg, N.C.) went two-for-three with two runs scored to lead the Mount Olive offense. Junior infielder Aubrey Reinhard (Goldsboro, N.C.) had a double and an RBI for the Trojans.
Wingate struck first in game one, plating a pair of runs in the second. Chavis led off the inning with a single, then scored on a single from Walsh. An RBI single from sophomore outfielder Kasey Pendley (Marion, N.C.) plated Walsh to make it 2-0.
The Trojans scored in the third, when Minshew singled, then scored on a Wingate error to make it 2-1.
The Bulldogs answered in the fourth, scoring four runs. Junior infielder Maureen Sandidge (Venice, Fla.) drove home the first run with an RBI single. Chavis followed with the big blow, a three run homer to left center to make it 6-1. An RBI double to right center from Ager in the fifth gave the ‘Dogs a six-run lead.
Mount Olive scored twice in the seventh to cut the final margin to four. The first run scored on a sacrifice fly, while an RBI double from Reinhard plated the final run of game one.
Senior right-hander Allison Smith (Daleville, Va.) got the win, improving to 10-2 on the year. She allowed one unearned run on three this in four innings of work. Freshman right-hander Carly White (Ash, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 5-6 on the year. She allowed seven runs on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings of work.
Game #2: Wingate 5, Mount Olive 2
Junior catcher Brittany Barrineau (Monroe, N.C. went one-for-two with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate attack. Chavis added a homer and two RBI, while sophomore first baseman Brittany Loudermilt (Stony Point, N.C.) added a pair of hits including a double for the Bulldogs.
Junior outfielder Katie Devenuto (Suffolk, Va.) went two-for-three with a double and RBI to lead the Mount Olive offense. Minshew added a hit and a run scored for the Trojans in game two.
Wingate once again got on the board early, scoring a run in the first inning. Freshman outfielder Jordyn Setzer (Taylorsville, N.C.) reached on a one-out single, then scored on an RBI fielder’s choice from Barrineau.
The Bulldogs added to their lead in the third, when Chavis hit a towering homer over the scoreboard in left, a two-run shot to make it 3-0. It was the fifth homer of the season for Chavis, which leads the team.
Mount Olive got on the board in the fifth, when freshman infielder Kalie Smith (Roanoke Rapids, Va.) walked, then scored on an RBI single from freshman outfielder Nicole Taliercio (Norwalk, Conn.).
Wingate added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the inning, when Barrineau lined her third homer of the season over the fence in right center, a two-run shot to make it 5-1.
Mount Olive added a run in the seventh to cut the Wingate lead to three. Minshew lined a two-out double off the top of the fence in center, then scored on an RBI single from Devenuto to make it 5-2.
Senior right-hander Brittany Blankenship (Midlothian, Va.) got the win, improving to 3-2 on the season. She allowed one run on two hits in 4 1/3 innings of work. Freshman right-hander Ashley Brown (Murrells Inlet, S.C.) pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits to notch her second save of the season. Junior right-hander Sarah Saunders (Suffolk, Va.) took the loss, falling to 4-10 on the year. She allowed five runs on eight hits in six innings of work.
Wingate returns to action Saturday, traveling to Tusculum to open conference play at 1 p.m.
