Charlotte, N.C.----The Queens University of Charlotte men’s lacrosse team turned a 4-4 tie into a six-goal advantage en route to an 14-11 NCAA Division II victory Wednesday afternoon at the Queens Sports Complex. The number eight team in this week’s USILA NCAA Division II top 10 poll, the Royals improve to 6-1 overall with their sixth straight victory. Wingate is 4-6 overall. The Bulldogs visit Lees-McRae College Saturday at 2 p.m. Queens returns home to host Pfeiffer University Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Queens started quickly, bolting to a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Junior attack Brian Rose (Stony Point, N.Y.) had two of the first three goals for the Royals. Wingate sophomore attack Colin O’Donoghue (Cranberry Township, Pa.) got the Bulldogs on the board with an unassisted goal at the 4:07 mark of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Queens sophomore midfield T.C. Whaley (Carlsbad, Calif.) put the Royals up 4-1 at the 13:18 mark. Wingate responded with three unanswered goals to tie the contest at 4-4. Bulldog sophomore midfield Derek Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) concluded the flurry with an unassisted goal at the 5:17 plateau.

Queens answered by scoring seven of the next eight goals to take an 11-5 lead with 5:04 remaining in the third quarter. Six different players scored goals during the game-changing run. Junior attack Corey Geroy (Horseheads, N.Y.) scored the game-winner with 3:19 to go in the second frame. Geroy had two goals in the run. Whaley and sophomore attack/midfield Jimmy Baker (Prince Fredrick, Md.) contributed one goal and one assist each in the Queens’ flurry.

Rose led Queens with two goals and three assists (five points). Four Royals had two goals each. Wingate junior attack David Lee (Greensboro, N.C.) had four goals to lead the Bulldogs. Sophomore attack Taylor Womble (Cary, N.C.) added two goals for the visitors.

Wingate outshot Queens 45-23. Queens senior goalkeeper Brandon Macknew (Abingdon, Md.) picked up the victory. He recorded 14 saves and allowed eight goals in 56-plus minutes. Bulldog junior goalkeeper Danny Dlugozima (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) took the loss. He surrendered eight goals and notched three saves in 31-plus minutes.
