Brittany Barrineau (Monroe, N.C.) blasted a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh inning in game one, leading the Bulldogs to a 4-2 win over the Lions of Mars Hill College in South Atlantic Conference softball action Friday afternoon. The Lions won the second game 6-1 to move to 21-10 overall and 3-3 in the SAC. The Bulldogs are 20-11 overall and 1-5 in the conference.
Game #1: Wingate 4, Mars Hill 2
Barrineau went three-for-four with a homer, three RBI and a run scored to lead the offense. Sophomore outfielder Kasey Pendley (Marion, N.C.) and freshman outfielder Jordyn Setzer (Taylorsville, N.C.) each had a hit and a run scored for the Bulldogs.
Senior catcher Jade Bullins (Danbury, N.C.) was one-for-two with an RBI to lead the Mars Hill attack. Freshman infielder Shaundee Woosley (Lexington, N.C.) also had a hit and an RBI for the Lions.
Mars Hill struck first, scoring two runs in the opening frame. The Lions loaded the bases via three walks, while Bullins drove home the first run with an RBI single. Woosley added an RBI single to put Mars Hill on top by two.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the fourth, when Barrineau led off the inning with a single. Senior Jessica McCraw (Waxhaw, N.C.) pinch ran for Barrineau, and scored on a sacrifice fly from freshman designated player Jessica Walsh (Columbia, S.C.) to make it 2-1.
Wingate added a run in the fifth to tie it. Pendley led off the frame with a single, then stole second. She scored when Barrineau lined a two-out RBI single to right, making it 2-2.
Setzer reached with a one-out single in the seventh. After a flyout, Barrineau came to the plate with one on and two outs. She lined a 2-2 pitch over the fence in left, her fourth homer of the year to give the ‘Dogs the 4-2 win.
Senior right-hander Allison Smith (Daleville, Va.) got the win, improving to 12-4 on the year. She allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings of work, striking out three. Freshman right-hander Hannah Light (Coeburn, Va.) took the loss, falling to 3-4 on the year. She allowed four runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings of work, striking out three.
Game #2: Mars Hill 6, Wingate 1
Sophomore pitcher Taylor Morris (Weddington, N.C.) notched the win for the Lions, while also providing the offense, going one-for-three with a homer and three RBI. Woosley had two RBI and a run scored for Mars Hill.
Junior infielder Maureen Sandidge (Venice, Fla.) had an RBI for the Bulldogs, while Walsh went two-for-three in game two.
The Lions did all of their damage in the third, scoring six runs. Senior infielder Ashley Seawell (Asheboro, N.C.) got it started with an RBI single. Woosley followed with a two-run single to left center to make it 3-0. Morris followed with the big blow, a three-run homer to left to put the Lions on top by six.
Wingate got one run back in the bottom of the frame, when Setzer reached on an error, then scored on an RBI single from Sandidge to make it 6-1.
Morris improved to 10-3 on the season, allowing one unearned run on six hits in seven innings of work, striking out five. Senior right-hander Brittany Blankenship (Midlothian, Va.) took the loss, falling to 3-3 on the year. She allowed four unearned runs on two hits in 2 2/3 innings. Smith pitched the last 2 2/3 innings without allowing a hit, striking out two.
The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday, hosting Catawba at 2 p.m. The Lions host Belmont Abbey Monday at 2 p.m.
