Lincoln Memorial tops Wingate 9-2 Saturday

Harrogate, Tenn.----The Lincoln Memorial University baseball team defeated Wingate University 9-2 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon. Game two of the doubleheader is in a rain delay, with LMU leading 4-3 in the fifth.

Game #1: Lincoln Memorial 9, Wingate 2

Cody Pack went two-for-three with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored to lead the LMU attack. Juan Alvarez added two RBI and two runs scored for the Railsplitters, while Gelson Perez went two-for-four with an RBI and a run scored.

Junior outfielder Dodson McPherson (Graham, N.C.) went three-for-four with a double and a run scored to lead the Wingate attack. Redshirt sophomore first baseman Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) added a double and an RBI for the Bulldogs.

The Railsplitters struck first in the fourth, when Alvarez walked, then scored on a wild pitch. An RBI double from Cody Baker in the fifth made it 2-0. Pack led off the sixth with a walk, then scored on an RBI single from Gelson Perez to push the lead to three.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the eighth, cutting the deficit to one. Freshman infielder Cody Shelton (Charlotte, N.C.) reached on a one-out single, while McPherson followed with a one-out single. Yeung lined an RBI double to right to plate Shelton, while McPherson scored on an RBI groundout from junior outfielder Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.).

LMU answered in the bottom of the frame, plating six runs. Pack got it started with a two-run homer to make it 5-2. A bases-loaded walk and RBI single pushed the lead to five, while Alvarez added a two-run single to make it 9-2.

Steven Starbird got the win, improving to 4-2 on the year. He allowed two runs on six hits in 7 1/3 innings of work, striking out four. Sophomore right-hander Justin Somers (Wilmington, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 3-3. He allowed three runs on three hits in six innings, striking out six.

Game #2: Lincoln Memorial 4, Wingate 3 (rain delay with in fifth inning)

The Railsplitters struck first in the first, via an RBI single from John Couch.

Wingate answered in the third, scoring three times to take the lead. Honeycutt got it started, leading off the inning with his eighth homer of the year to tie the game at one. Shelton lined a single to right center, while Yeung followed with a double to put two on for Allison, who delivered with a two-run single to give the ‘Dogs a 3-1 lead.

Perez answered with a two-run single for the Railsplitters to tie it in the bottom of the third. A solo homer from Woody in the fourth put LMU on top 4-3.
