GAME ONE BOX SCORE          GAME TWO BOX SCORE

Wingate, N.C.----
Wingate University senior right-hander Allison Smith (Daleville, Va.) notched a pair of wins, while senior infielder Emily Chavis (Berkeley Lake, Ga.) homered in each game to lead the Bulldogs to a doubleheader sweep over the Catawba College Indians in South Atlantic Conference softball action Tuesday afternoon. The Bulldogs won the first game 3-0, while taking game two 4-2 to improve to 22-11 overall and 3-5 in the SAC. Catawba falls to 19-15 overall and 2-4 in the SAC.

Game #1
Wingate 3, Catawba 0

Smith struck out 10 in the complete game shutout, while Chavis went two-for-three with a homer to lead the offense. Freshman outfielder Jordyn Setzer (Taylorsville, N.C.) was one-for-three with an RBI and run scored, while sophomore infielder Maureen Sandidge (Venice, Fla.) was one-for-three with an RBI.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the fourth, when Setzer reached second on a Catawba error to start the inning. Sandidge drove her home with an RBI single to make it 1-0. Setzer added a two-out RBI single in the fifth to give Wingate a two-run advantage. Chavis blasted her sixth homer of the season in the sixth, a solo shot, to make it 3-0.

The three-run cushion would be plenty for Smith, who moved to 13-4 overall on the season. She went the distance, allowing six hits (all singles) and striking out 10 for the second time in the 2011 season. She did not walk a batter, while throwing 100 pitches in game one. Catawba freshman right-hander Emily Huneycutt (Locust, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 9-7 overall. She allowed three runs on six hits in six innings of work, striking out four.

Game #2
Wingate 4, Catawba 2

Chavis had a homer and two RBI to lead the Wingate attack in game two. Sophomore first baseman Brittany Loudermilt (Stony Point, N.C.) was two-for-three with a run scored, while Sandidge had a double and an RBI for the Bulldogs.

Freshman infielder Kayla Myers (Bryson City, N.C.) had a double, an RBI and a run scored to lead the Catawba attack. Sophomore catcher Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, N.C.) was two-for-three with an RBI, while sophomore outfielder Amanda Terry (Cordova, N.C.) had a double and a run scored for the Indians.

Catawba got on the board first in game two, scoring twice in the opening frame. Terry doubled to left, then scored on an RBI double from Myers. An RBI single from Gibbs gave the Indians a 2-0 lead.

The Bulldogs had the answer in the bottom of the frame. Chavis blasted her seventh homer of the year off the scoreboard in left, a two-run shot, to tie the game. Wingate added a run in the fourth to take the lead. Loudermilt singled, then scored on an RBI double from senior infielder Gina Ager (Columbia, Md.). The ‘Dogs added another insurance run in the fifth, getting an RBI double from Sandidge to make the score 4-2.

Smith notched her second win of the day, going the distance once again to improve to 14-4 overall. She allowed two runs on eight hits, striking out five while throwing another 129 pitches in game two. Catawba junior right-hander Brittany Murray (Asheboro, N.C.) took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings, falling to 10-8 overall.

Wingate returns to action Saturday, traveling to Lincoln Memorial University for a 1 p.m. start. Catawba hosts Newberry College Saturday at 1 p.m.
