Spartanburg, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs opened play in the 2011 Mid-South Classic with a 6-1 win over the Pirates of Armstrong Atlantic State Saturday afternoon at the 295 Softball Complex. Wingate improves to 10-5 overall, and has four remaining games scheduled this weekend. Saturday's matchup with #3 North Georgia, which was originally scheduled for a 5 p.m. start, has been moved back to a 9 p.m. start.
Sophomore outfielder
Kasey Pendley (Marion, N.C.) led the Wingate attack with a three-for-three day at the plate, as the ‘Dogs collected 10 hits on the afternoon. Junior catcher
Brittany Barrineau (Monroe, N.C.) added a three-for-four day, while junior shortstop
Maureen Sandidge (Venice, Fla.) homered for the Bulldogs.
Senior right-hander
Allison Smith (Daleville, Va.) got the win, going the distance while allowing one run on five hits and striking out nine. The preseason All-SAC selection ties her season high in strikeouts, while improving to 6-2 overall.
